Notes:

• This utility is a bootable diskette based program, so you need to prepare a Floppy Diskette Drive(FDD) for your ThinkPad system. Please consult documentation included with your ThinkPad system. If you encounter a problem attaching a FDD to your ThinkPad system, please call your local Help Center.
• The diskette contains several executable files other than FW.EXE. Do not run these programs. Running these programs other than FW.EXE could ruin your CD-RW/DVD drive.
• The update utility can not identify a CD-RW/DVD drive in the docking station. In this case, remove the drive from the docking station and install it in a device bay of your ThinkPad system and then boot this diskette. If you encounter a problem installing the CD-RW/DVD drive into the ThinkPad system , please call your local Help Center.
• In Microsoft Windows XP, after updating the firmware, boot the machine and shut it down again. This is necessary the first time for the registry changes to be recognized.

Attention: Do not power off the ThinkPad during the firmware being updated, or your CD-RW/DVD drive may NOT be usable anymore.

1. Place a blank, formatted floppy diskette in the A: drive.
2. Close all open applications
3. Click the file link above to download the file from the Web page.
4. When prompted, select a drive and directory in which to save the downloaded file.
5. Run the Fwdr1x01.exe file you downloaded to create the bootable diskette, where "x" indicates the numeric character in the filename.
6. Follow the instructions on the screen to create the diskette.
7. When the diskette has been created, place the diskette in the ThinkPad system that has the CD-RW/DVD drive to be updated.
8. Boot the system from the diskette.
9. Drives that have been detected will be listed in the upper area of the Main Menu. If a drive that requires an update is detected, it will be shown with a blinking mark on the left. If you find no blinking mark, your CD-RW/DVD drive has latest firmware and does not require an update or the update firmware is not for your drive. Please remove this diskette and shutdown your ThinkPad system.
10. You will be prompted to insert a specified diskette, in case where the supported drive firmware is not located on the already inserted diskette.
11. Follow the instructions on the screen to update the necessary CD-RW/DVD drives.
12. When the installation is complete, remove the Firmware Update Utility diskette from floppy disk drive and power off your ThinkPad system. Do not restart the ThinkPad system with the ctrl-alt-del keys.
