This package provides the audio driver for Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows 2000, and Microsoft Windows 98SE.
This package enables or updates the audio function of the following ThinkPad computers: - ThinkPad A31, A31p - ThinkPad T30 - ThinkPad X30
Note: - This program is language independent and can be used with any language system. |

Note: Support for the following models were taken over by another package.
- ThinkPad R40, R50, R50e, R50p, R51
- ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p
- ThinkPad X31, X32, X40

Note: This driver can be installed with the Software Installer, or by following the instructions below.
- Start Windows and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator for Windows 2000/XP.
- Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start and then click Run.
- Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click OK.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
- Click Finish and reboot the system when prompted in order to complete the installation.
Note: Remove any previously installed driver using the uninstall step in the next section.
- Start Windows and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator for Windows 2000/XP.
- Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start and then click Run.
- Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click OK.
- If the dialog box appears, select Reinstall or Update and then click Next.
- Click Finish to reboot the system and complete the installation.
Note: This is for system administrators' use only.
- Start Windows and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator for Windows 2000/XP.
- Extract this package onto the hard drive.
- Click Start and then click Run.
- Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE -S -SMS in the Open box and click OK.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
- Start Windows and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator for Windows 2000/XP.

Depending on the operating system choose one of the following paths:
- For Windows 98SE/Me/2000, click Start, select Settings, then click Control Panel.
- For Windows XP, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- Click SoundMax, and then click Change/Remove or Add/Remove.
- Select Remove or OK, then click Next or OK.
- Click Finish or OK and reboot the system to fully uninstall the drivers.
- Start Windows.
- Click Start, select Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click System. For Windows 2000, click the Hardware tab at the top of the System Properties window.
- Click Device Manager.
- Expand the Sound, video and game controllers section.
- Select SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio.
- Right-click SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio, and select Properties.
- Click the Driver tab.
- Click Driver Details.

- For Windows 2000, select C:\winnt\system32\drivers\smwdm.sys to display the version number, where C:\winnt is the location the operating system is installed. (Confirm the last 4 digits match the version)
- For Windows 98SE/Me, select C:\windows\system32\drivers\smwdm.sys to display the version number, where C:\windows is the location the operating system is installed. (Confirm the last 4 digits match the version)
- Start Windows XP.
- Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
- Click Performance and Maintenance.
- Click System.
- Click the Hardware tab.
- Click Device Manager.
- Expand the Sound, video and game controllers section.
- Select SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio.
- Right-click SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio, and select Properties.
- Click the Driver tab.
- Click Driver Details.
- Select C:\winnt\system32\drivers\smwdm.sys to display the version number, where C:\winnt is the location the operating system is installed. (Confirm the last 4 digits match the version)
