Embedded Controller Program (Non-Diskette) - ThinkPad X30

This Embedded Controller Program Update Utility updates the Embedded Controller Program (H8 controller firmware) stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.

This release supports the following system:
- ThinkPad X30

The supported operating systems are as follows:
- Microsoft Windows 98
- Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition(*1)
- Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6 or later
- Microsoft Windows 2000
- Microsoft Windows XP

Notes:
- *1Before using the Embedded Controller Program Update Utility with Windows 98 Second Edition, apply the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from the Microsoft Web Site Knowledge Base Article ID Q239887.
- This version of Embedded Controller Program will only work with BIOS Version 1.07 (or higher). If you update the BIOS as well as the Embedded Controller Program, update the Embedded Controller first.

I. Summary of changes
Version 1.02 (1KHT14WW)
Note:
This version of Embedded Controller Program will only work with BIOS Version 1.00c or higher.
  • (Fix) (Windows XP and Windows 2000) If the computer is attached to the UltraBase X3 with a battery installed and goes into standby mode, warm-undocking the system from the UltraBase X3 may be failed.
  • (Fix) (Windows NT 4.0 and DOS) If the computer is attached to the UltraBase X3 with a battery installed, beeps may sound continuously when the system resumes normal operation from suspend mode.
  • (Fix) The battery may not be charged while the computer is turned off.

Version 1.03 (1KHT15WW)
Note: This version of Embedded Controller Program will only work with BIOS Version 1.07 or higher.

  • (New) Improvement of the control function of the battery.

Version 1.04 (1KHT16WW)
Note:
This version of Embedded Controller Program will only work with BIOS Version 1.07 or higher.

  • (Fix) Charge will stop with some batteries.
  • (Fix) After completing Embedded Controller Program update and if the computer is automatically rebooted, the error message, "Operating System not found", may be displayed and then reboot stops.

Version 1.06 (1KHT18WW)
Note: This version of Embedded Controller Program will only work with BIOS Version 1.07 (or higher).

  • (New) Enhanced safety with unsupported battery packs.
II. Installation instructions
Notes:
  • You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the Embedded Controller Program.
  • If your computer is attached to any kind of port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
  • If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to your computer, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
  • Before using this BIOS Update Utility with Windows 98 Second Edition, apply the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from the Microsoft Web site Knowledge Base Article ID Q239887.
  • Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the Embedded Controller Program in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment.
  1. Print these instructions or display on another computer.
  2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
  3. Start Windows 98 or start Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer.
  4. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  5. Click the Start button, then click Run.
  6. Specify file name with the full path name where you extracted the package. (e.g. C:\Temp\1KHJ05US.EXE) Then click OK.

    Note: For unattended update, specify the file name with options "-s -a -s". (e.g. C:\Temp\1KHJ05US -s -a -s) The BIOS is updated without any user interaction.

  7. Follow the instructions on the screen.

    Depending on the operating system configuration, restarting the operating system and rerunning this Embedded Controller Program update utility may be required. In this case, the following message will appear:

    "DeviceIoControl() returns 2
    Please restart your operating system and
    execute the BIOS or Embedded Controller
    update utility again."

    Windows will shut down automatically and the Embedded Controller Program Update Utility screen appears.

  8. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears.
  9. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 1
  10. Select Update Embedded Controller Program and follow the instruction on the screen.

    Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. If you turn off or suspend the computer while the update is still in progress, the system board may have to be replaced.

    After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off.

III. Determining which version is installed
Each version of the Embedded Controller Program Update Utility contains the following Embedded Controller Program. Also the supported BIOS versions are shown below. The version of Embedded Controller Program can be viewed by entering the BIOS Setup Utility.

To enter the BIOS Setup Utility:

  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Make sure there is no diskette in the diskette drive.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. While the "Press F1 for the BIOS Setup Utility" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. Check Embedded Controller Version and BIOS Version.
