Troubleshooting power management issues - ThinkPad
Applicable countries and regions
Some of these steps may not apply to your computer. Test the system under normal operating conditions to verify the power management settings after performing each step:

Battery drains more quickly than expected

  1. Verify that the latest BIOS and Embedded Controller when available for the ThinkPad system have been installed.
Note: Not all ThinkPad systems require a separate Embedded Controller utility.

Click here to view the latest BIOS files for all ThinkPad systems.

  2. Adjust the power management settings according to your preferences and environment.
    1. Open the ThinkPad Configuration application by one of the following methods:
      • Click Start, select Programs, select ThinkPad, select ThinkPad Utilities, and then click ThinkPad Configuration.
      • Click Start, select All Programs, select Access IBM or Access ThinkPad, select ThinkPad Utilities on some configurations, and then click ThinkPad Configuration.
      • Click Start, select All Programs, select ThinkVantage, and then click ThinkPad Configuration.
    2. Click the Power Management icon. The Power Options Properties window will be displayed.

  3. Verify the health of the system battery.
    1. Click the Battery Gauge Icon Battery MaxiMiser Guage icon on the taskbar and then click Launch Power Manager.... The Power Scheme window will appear.
Note: The screenshots and steps outlined may be different depending on the version you are running of Battery Maximiser or Power Manager.

    2. Click the Battery Information tab to view the condition of the battery.

    Notes:

    • Status of the battery:
      • Green means good condition
      • Red means the battery needs to be replaced. ThinkPad system batteries typically have a maximum warranty of one year.
Note: If your battery needs to be replaced, then see the Need more help? section below to contact the Support Center or buy a replacement.
    • Remaining time is calculated based on the current remaining capacity divided by the average current battery consumption (wattage). Depending on the current battery wattage consumption, remaining time calculated can change. For example, with the system running at the Maximum Performance setting for the processor, the system consumes more battery power, so the remaining time is shorter. A good analogy would be driving a car. When you drive faster, you use more gasoline; slower uses less. If you speed up and slow down frequently, it is more difficult to estimate how much driving time you have left.
    • The Power scheme settings can also be adjusted to improve battery life and performance.

  1. Disable any screen savers in the operating system.
    1. Right-click on the desktop background of the Microsoft operating system and then click Properties. The Display Properties window will be displayed.
    2. Click the Screen Saver tab.
    3. Select None from the pull-down list and then click OK.

  2. Disable any terminate and stay resident (TSR) applications.
    Notes:
    • These TSR applications may prevent some power management functions because they are constantly monitoring the computer.
    • Select the icon for an application from the system tray and click exit or disable from the menu.

  3. Scan all the files on the system with AntiVirus software using the vendor's latest virus definitions.

  4. Scan the system for spyware using the anti-spyware software's latest definitions. Perform a Web search for spyware software for more information.

  5. Verify the driver and firmware versions are the latest for attached hardware. This can be verified at the manufacturer's Web site, if available.

  6. Remove any attached hardware and device drivers. For testing purposes, temporarily disconnect any devices one at a time. Ensure all attached hardware is Advanced Power Management (APM) or Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) compliant. This can be verified in the hardware device User's Guide from the manufacturer.

  7. Load the original or an earlier configuration.
Save current settings using ConfigSafe or System Restore, and then load the original or an earlier configuration. If you do not have either of these applications on your system, then continue to the next step.
To check if the ConfigSafe application is available on your system, click Start and then Programs to see the list of available applications.
To open Microsoft Windows XP System Restore, click Start, select All Programs, select Accessories, select System Tools, and then click System Restore.

  8. Load the original configuration in the BIOS.
    • For ThinkPad A, R, T, and X series systems
      1. Turn on the computer.
      2. While the "Press F1 for BIOS Setup Utility or the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
      3. Press the F9 key and then select Yes to load the default configuration.
      4. Press the F10 key and then select Yes to save the configuration changes and exit.
    • For ThinkPad 600, 600E, 770, 770E/ED, 770X, and 770Z systems
      1. Press and hold the F1 key, then turn on the computer. Hold the F1 key until the Easy-Setup menu appears. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
      2. Select Config.
      3. Select Initialize and then click OK.
      4. Click Exit, click Restart, and then click OK to restart the system.
