I. Summary of changes

II. Installation instructions
Notes:
- This driver can be installed with the ThinkPad Software Installer, or by following the instructions in the next section.
- In both cases, please confirm that the driver is correctly installed, by determining the installed driver version as described below.
Clean installation
- Start Windows and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator for Windows 2000/XP.
- Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start and then click Run.
- Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click OK.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
- Click Finish and Reboot the system when prompted in order to complete the installation.
Upgrading or reinstall
Note: Remove any previously installed driver using the uninstall step in the next section.
- Start Windows and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator for Windows 2000/XP.
- Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start and then click Run.
- Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click OK.
- If the dialog box appears, select Reinstall or Update and then click Next.
- Click Finish to reboot the system and complete the installation.
Unattended installation
Note: This is for system administrators' use only.
- Start Windows and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator for Windows 2000/XP.
- Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start and then click Run.
- Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE -S -SMS in the Open box and click OK.
Uninstalling the driver
- Start Windows 2000/XP and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator.

Depending on the operating system choose one of the following paths:
- If Windows 98SE/2000, Click Start, select Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- If Windows XP, Click Start and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- Click SoundMAX, then click Change/Remove (or Add/Remove).
- Select Remove or OK, then click Next or OK.
- Click Finish or OK and reboot the system to fully uninstall the drivers.
III. Determining which version is installed
For Windows 98SE/2000
- Start Windows.
- Click Start, select Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click System.
- Click the Hardware tab at the top of the System Properties window for Windows 2000.
- Click Device Manager.
- Expand the Sound, video and game controllers section.
- Select SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio.
- Right-click SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio, and select Properties.
- Click the Driver tab.

Click Driver Details.
- For Windows 2000: Select C:\winnt\system32\drivers\smwdm.sys, to display the version number, where C:\winnt is the location the operating system is installed. (Confirm the last 4 digits are 5160)
- For Windows 98SE: Select C:\windows\system32\drivers\smwdm.sys, to display the version number, where C:\windows is the location the operating system is installed. (Confirm the last 4 digits are 5160)
For Windows XP
- Start Windows XP.
- Click Start and then click Control Panel.
- Click Performance and Maintenance.
- Click System.
- Click the Hardware tab.
- Click Device Manager.
- Expand the Sound, video and game controllers section.
- Select SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio.
- Right-click SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio, and select Properties.
- Click the Driver tab.
- Click Driver Details. Select C:\winnt\system32\drivers\smwdm.sys, to display the version number, where C:\winnt is the location the operating system is installed. (Confirm the last 4 digits are 5160)
