  • To run PC-Doctor DOS by booting the computer from the CD-R/CD-RW disc, it is necessary to have the CD-R/CD-RW writing software (with CD-R/CD-RW creation function from the ISO image file) prepared separately.
  • The CD-R/CD-RW disc for PC-Doctor DOS does not support any optical disc drives connected through USB devices, PC Cards, CardBus cards or installed into the Ultrabay of the Docking Station. It only supports internal optical disc drives (CD-RW, CD-RW/DVD Combo and DVD Multi drives) on ThinkPad systems.
  • To boot the computer from an internal optical disc drive, your ThinkPad computer may need to change the boot device setting. Refer to the "Preparing the boot device" section in this document.

Creating the bootable CD
  1. Make sure you have a ThinkPad system with a CD-RW, CD-RW/DVD Combo, or DVD Multi drive installed and a blank CD-R or CD-RW disc.
  2. Start Windows.
  3. Extract this package onto the hard drive.
  4. Start your CD-R/RW writing software's feature for creating a CD from an ISO image. Refer to the help provided with your CD-R/ CD-RW writing software for further assistance.
  5. Select a CD ISO image file located in the folder you extracted the package to in step 2. The default folder is C:\DRIVERS\WIN\PCDRDOS The ISO image file name is xxxxxxxx.ISO
  6. Create the CD.

Preparing Boot Device

Confirm that the internal CD-RW, CD-RW/DVD Combo or DVD Multi drive is in the boot device list of your BIOS setup.

  1. Power off the computer.
  2. Power on the computer.
  3. Press the F1 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility when the "ThinkPad" logo is seen on the screen. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  4. Choose Startup from the menu.
  5. Choose Boot from the menu.
  6. Make sure "ATAPI CD0" is listed in boot priority order. Note the current boot priority order for restoration later and then change the "ATAPI CD0" order if you need to modify your boot list.
  7. Press the F3 key to exit, or the F10 key to save the new setup and then select Yes.
  8. Turn off the computer.

Diagnostics procedure
  1. Turn off the system.
  2. Make sure the CD-ROM/DVD drive which is supported as a startup device for your ThinkPad is attached to the system.
  3. Turn on the system.
  4. While either of the following messages is displayed at the lower left area of the screen, press the F12 key to display the boot menu:
    • To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button or the enter key.
Press F12 to choose temporary boot device
    • Press F1 for BIOS Setup Utility
Press F11 to invoke the Product Recovery program
Press F12 to choose temporary boot device

Note: The Boot Menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.

  1. Insert the PC-Doctor DOS CD into the CD-ROM/DVD drive.
  2. Press the cursor keys to select either of the following devices, and press the Enter to start PC Doctor for DOS:
    • ATAPI CDx (x: 0, 1, ...)
    • CD-ROM Drive
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  4. After performing the diagnostics, remove the CD from the CD-ROM/DVD drive and turn off the system.

Determining which version is installed
  1. Run PC-Doctor DOS.
  2. Select the Quit menu by keyboard or mouse.
  3. Select About to view the version number.

Note: This version information does not show minor version. For example, the version 2.0.651a shows version 2.0.651.

Known limitations
  1. The Intel Wireless Radio test may return FAILED if the security function is enabled in the access point.
  2. The additional hard drive may appear in the Surface Scan Hard Disk utility and the Erase Hard Drive Erase Hard Drive. But this is not an actual device failure because this CD is used as a virtual hard drive.
  3. To test the CD-ROM or DVD on ThinkPad A30 or A30p, use floppy disk version instead of this CD.
  4. Before starting several tests, Serial ATA (SATA) setting must be changed by the BIOS Setup Utility, as follows:
    • SATA Controller Mode Option: [Compatibility]
    • Setting change is needed for the following tests:
      • Fixed Disks Linear Verify
      • Fixed Disks Random Verify
      • Analog Devices HDA CODEC Test
    • If SATA Controller Mode Option does not appear in the BIOS Setup Utility, the setting change in not needed.
