Embedded Controller Program (Non-Diskette) - ThinkPad R52 (1846, 1847, 1848, 1849, 1850, 1870)

This Embedded Controller Program Utility updates the embedded controller program (H8 controller firmware) stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.

This release supports the following systems:
- ThinkPad R52 (Machine Type 1846, 1847, 1848, 1849, 1850, 1870)

Notes:
- This version of Embedded Controller Program will only work with BIOS Version 1.23 (or higher). The BIOS is available in an additional package, a link is provided below.
- If you need to update the BIOS as well as the Embedded Controller Program, update the BIOS first.
- This program is language independent and can be used with any language system.

The supported operating systems are as follows:
- Microsoft Windows 2000
- Microsoft Windows XP

Version 76HT16WW (1.06)
Note:
This version of Embedded Controller Program will only work with BIOS Version 1.23 (or higher).
  • (Fix) The previously released Embedded Controller version 1.05 (76HT15WW) may spontaneously cause wrong key input when using an external PS/2 type keyboard.
    • Numeric characters (2, 4, 6 and 8) may be inserted while pressing the cursor keys
    • Shift key operation is done without pressing the shift key
    • Only upper case characters are typed
    • Multiple selections with the cursor keys
    • Numeric keypad may work as the cursor keys
Version 76HT15WW (1.05)
Note:
This version of Embedded Controller Program will only work with BIOS Version 1.23 (or higher).
  • (New) Support for ThinkPad NumLock.
    Refer to the description of version 1.23 in the Readme file of ThinkPad R52 (Machine Types 1846, 1847, 1848, 1849, 1850, 1870) BIOS.

Version 76HT14WW (1.04)
Note:
This version of Embedded Controller Program will only work with BIOS Version 1.02 (or higher).

  • (New) Improvement of thermal control process.
  • (New) Improvement of resume process from suspend mode with the secondary battery.

Version 76HT12WW (1.02)
Note:
This version of Embedded Controller Program will only work with BIOS Version 1.02 (or higher).

  • (New) Improvement of Fan control.

Installation instructions
Notes:
  • You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the Embedded Controller program.
  • If your system is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the system and detach it before proceeding.
  • If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to your system, turn off the system and detach it before proceeding.
  • Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the Embedded Controller Program in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment.

Automatic installation
Use the Software Installer version 3.01.0503 (or higher).
The ThinkPad Software Installer will check both installed program in your ThinkPad and Lenovo Web site. Then download and update the program automatically if a newer version is available.
Refer to the Software Installer package for details.

Manual installation
  1. Print these instructions or display on another system.
  2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the system.
  3. Start Microsoft Windows XP/2000 and logon with administrative privileges on the target system.
  4. Make a temporary directory on the hard drive (for instance, C:\Temp)
  5. Download the Embedded Controller Program Update Utility from the web site and store the file into the temporary directory.
  6. Click the Start button, then click Run.
  7. In the Open dialogue box, specify the utility filename with the full path name where you stored Embedded Controller Program Update Utility. (e.g. C:\Temp\76HJ05US.EXE) and then press the Enter key
    Note: For unattended update, specify the file name with options "-s -a -s". (e.g. C:\Temp\76HJ05US.EXE -s -a -s) The Embedded Controller Program is updated without any user interaction.
  8. Follow the instructions on the screen.
    Depending on the operating system configuration, restarting the operating system and rerunning this Embedded Controller Program update utility may be required. In this case, the following message will appear on the screen. "DeviceIoControl() returns 2 Please restart your operating system and execute the BIOS or Embedded Controller update utility again."
    Windows will shut down automatically and ThinkPad Embedded Controller Program Update Utility screen appears.
  9. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears.
  10. Press the Esc key to return to the menu.
  11. Select Update Embedded Controller program and follow the instructions on the screen.

    Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the system until the update has been completed. If you turn off or suspend the system while the update is still in progress, the system board may have to be replaced.

    After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off.
    Do the following to make sure the Embedded Controller program is updated correctly.

  12. Turn on the system.
  13. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button message is displayed at the lower left of the screen, press the Access IBM button.
  14. Select Start setup utility. If you have set a supervisor password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you type in the password.
  15. Verify the Embedded Controller Version.

Determining which version is installed
Each version of the Embedded Controller Program Update Utility contains the following embedded controller program. The version of embedded controller program can be viewed by running ThinkPad Configurator from your operating system and selecting the System Information button or by invoking BIOS Setup Utility.
  1. Turn off the system.
  2. Turn on the system.
  3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button message is displayed at the lower left of the screen, press the Access IBM button.
  4. Select Start setup utility. If you have set a supervisor password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you type in the password. The embedded controller version is displayed on the first screen of the BIOS Setup Utility.
