Audio driver for Windows XP, 2000, 98SE - ThinkPad R40, R50, R50e, R50p, R51, T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p, X31, X32, X40

This package provides the audio driver for Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows 2000, and Microsoft Windows 98 SE.
This package enables or updates the audio function of the following ThinkPad computers:
- ThinkPad R40 - ThinkPad R50(*1), R50e(*1), R50p(*1), R51(*1) - ThinkPad T40, T40p(*1), T41, T41p(*1), T42, T42p(*1) - ThinkPad X31, X32(*1) - ThinkPad X40 (*1) Note: *1: Only Windows 2000 and Windows XP are supported. |

(Fix) Modem negotiation sound issue.
(Note) Support for the following models were taken over by another package.
- ThinkPad A30, A30p, A31, A31p

- ThinkPad X30

Note: This driver can be installed with Software Installer, or by following the instructions below.
- Start Windows and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator for Windows 2000/XP.
- Extract this package onto the hard drive.
- Click Start and then click Run.
- Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click OK.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
- Click Finish and reboot the system when prompted in order to complete the installation.
Note: Remove any previously installed driver using the uninstall step in the next section.
- Start Windows and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator for Windows 2000/XP.
- Extract this package onto the hard drive.
- Click Start and then click Run.
- Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click OK.
- If the dialog box appears, select Reinstall or Update and then click Next.
- Click Finish to reboot the system and complete the installation.
Note: This is for system administrators' use only.
- Start Windows and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator for Windows 2000/XP.
- Extract this package onto the hard drive.
- Click Start and then click Run.
- Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE -S -SMS in the Open box and click OK.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
- Start Windows and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator for Windows 2000/XP.

Depending on the operating system choose one of the following paths:
- For Windows 98SE/Me/2000, click Start, select Settings, then click Control Panel.
- For Windows XP, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- Click SoundMax, and then click Change/Remove or Add/Remove.
- Select Remove or OK, then click Next or OK.
- Click Finish or OK and reboot the system to fully uninstall the drivers.
- Start Windows.
- Click Start, select Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click System. For Windows 2000, click the Hardware tab at the top of the System Properties window.
- Click Device Manager.
- Expand the Sound, video and game controllers section.
- Select SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio.
- Right-click SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio, and select Properties.
- Click the Driver tab.
- Click Driver Details.

- Start Windows XP.
- Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
- Click Performance and Maintenance.
- Click System.
- Click the Hardware tab.
- Click Device Manager.
- Expand the Sound, video and game controllers section.
- Select SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio.
- Right-click SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio, and select Properties.
- Click the Driver tab.
- Click Driver Details.
- Select C:\winnt\system32\drivers\smwdm.sys to display the version number, where C:\winnt is the location the operating system is installed. (Confirm the last 4 digits match the version)
