This Embedded Controller Program Update Utility updates the embedded controller firmware stored in the ThinkPad computer to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.
This release supports the following systems: - ThinkPad Z60m, Z60t
The supported operating systems are as follows: - Microsoft Windows XP (Home Edition and Professional) - Microsoft Windows 2000
Notes: - This version of Embedded Controller Program will only work with BIOS version 1.19 (or higher). The BIOS is available in an additional package, a link is provided below. - If you need to update the BIOS as well as the Embedded Controller Program, update the BIOS first. - This program is language independent and can be used with any language system.
Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the Embedded Controller Program in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment.
You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the Embedded Controller Program.
If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to your computer, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
Automatic installation
Use Software Installer version 3.01.0503 (or higher). Software Installer will check both installed programs on your ThinkPad and the latest drivers on the Lenovo Web site, then download and update the programs automatically if a newer version is available.
Manual installation
Print these instructions or display on another system.
Firmly connect the AC adapter to the system.
Start Microsoft Windows XP/2000 and logon with administrative privileges on the target system.
Save the Embedded Controller Program Update Utility file from the Web site and store the file into either a temporary directory or on the Windows desktop.
Double-click the saved file on the Windows Desktop and follow the instructions on the screen.
OR
If you saved the file into a temporary directory (e.g. C:\Temp), click Start, then click Run. In the Open dialog box, specify the utility filename with the full path name where you stored Embedded Controller Program Update Utility file (e.g. C:\Temp\77hjxxus.exe) and then press the Enter key.
Follow the instructions on the screen.
Depending on the operating system configuration, restarting the operating system and rerunning this BIOS update utility may be required. In this case, the following message will appear.
"DeviceIoControl() returns 2 Please restart your operating system and execute the BIOS or Embedded Controller update utility again."
Windows will shut down automatically and ThinkPad Embedded Controller Program Update Utility screen appears.
Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears.
Press the Esc key to return to the menu.
Select Update Embedded Controller program and follow the instructions on the screen.
After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off.
Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the system until the update has been completed. If you turn off or suspend the system while the update is still in progress, the system board may have to be replaced.
Turn on the system.
While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left of the screen, press the F1 key.
Select Start setup utility. If you have set a supervisor password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you type in the password.
Verify the Embedded Controller Version.
Unattended update installation:
This procedure is intended for system administrators only.
At the command prompt, specify the Embedded Controller Program Update Utility file name with options "-s -a -s". (e.g. C:\Temp\77hjxxus.exe -s -a -s).
Press the Enter key to start installation process. If you have saved the file to a different location, specify the location, instead.
Determining which version is installed
The version of the Embedded Controller Program can be viewed by running ThinkPad Configuration from your operating system and selecting the System Information button or by invoking the BIOS Setup Utility.
To start the ThinkPad Configuration program, click Start, select All Programs (or Programs), select ThinkVantage, and then click ThinkPad Configuration.
Click System Information.
Click BIOS information. The BIOS version and Embedded Controller version will be displayed.
Click OK to exit.
OR
With the system off, turn on the system.
While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower left of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version.
