This System Program Service Utility updates the BIOS (system program including the Embedded Controller (EC) program) stored in the system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.
This release supports the following systems: - ThinkPad Z61e, Z61m, Z61p, Z61t
The following operating systems are supported: - Microsoft Windows Vista 32-bit and 64-bit (*1) - Microsoft Windows XP (Home Edition and Professional) - Microsoft Windows 2000
Notes:. *1: Windows Vista 64-bit supports Intel Core 2 Duo mobile processors only. - If your RecordNow! CD writing program does not have a "Burn Image" entry, please upgrade RecordNow! - This program is language independent and can be used with any language system. - This package is compiled into an ISO format, which is compatible with CD writing software such as RecordNow!(*), and writable to a CD-R or a CD-RW disc.
Make sure you have a ThinkPad system with a CD-RW, CD-RW/DVD combo, or DVD multidrive installed and a blank CD-R or CD-RW disc.
Start Windows Vista, XP, 2000 and logon with administrative privileges.
Download the ISO file.
For Windows Vista, click Start, then click Start Search. For Windows XP, 2000, click Start, then click Run...
Specify the path where you downloaded the file, then click OK. RecordNow! or the default recording software will open. Example: C:\temp\7fuj25uc.iso
Follow the instructions on the screen.
Prepare the boot device
The resulting CD-R or CD-RW disc includes an operating system and is bootable on the supported ThinkPad models.
Note: The System Program Service Utility bootable CD supports only the ThinkPad Ultrabay Optical Disc Drive in the ThinkPad Ultrabay.(Not in the Docking Station Ultra bay)
Please confirm that an Optical Disc Drive is in the boot device list of your BIOS setup.
Turn on the system.
While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key.
Select Startup, then select Boot(*).
Under "Boot Priority Order," set "ATAPI CD0" to the top of the list, "1."
Press F10 to save the new setup.
Turn off or restart the system.
*Note: Please write down the current boot priority order for restoration later if you need to modify your boot list.
Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment.
You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS.
If your system is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the system and detach it before proceeding.
Print these instructions or display on another system.
Firmly connect the AC adapter to the system.
Place the System Program Service Utility (BIOS) CD into your ThinkPad Optical Disc Drive and turn on the system.
Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. Press the Esc key to return to the menu.
Select Update system program and follow the instructions on the screen.
Attention:
Do not turn off or suspend the system until the update has been completed. If you turn off or suspend the system while the update is still in progress, the system board may have to be replaced.
After information panel appears, remove the CD-R or CD-RW disc in the drive then press Enter key to restart the system.
Do the following to make sure the BIOS is updated correctly.
Turn off the system.
Turn on the system.
While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
Verify the BIOS Version.
Enter the BIOS Setup Utility if you need to restore your original boot order.
BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS settings:
Turn off the system.
Turn on the system.
While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If you have set a supervisor password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you enter the password.
Press the F9 key to load default configuration.
Select Yes.
Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit.
Select Yes.
Power off or restart the system.
Notes:
After initialization you may need to reapply some settings that you had changed previously.
After the initialization has been completed, the system restarts automatically.
Each version of the System Program Service Utility contains the following system program (BIOS) and the Embedded Controller program. The BIOS Version and the Embedded Controller version number can be viewed by entering the BIOS Setup Utility.
Turn on the system.
While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key.
The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If you have set a supervisor password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you type in the password.
Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version.

Notes:
(*1) This area becomes free by disabling the Internal Network Option ROM option under Config and Network in the BIOS Setup Utility. This choice will disable PXE and WOL features.
(*2) This area becomes free by disabling the USB BIOS Support option under Config and USB in the BIOS Setup Utility. This choice does not affect using USB devices in Windows operating systems.
