BIOS update utility - ThinkPad X61 Tablet
Applicable countries and regions
This BIOS Update Utility updates the BIOS (system program) and the Embedded Controller(EC) program stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.

This release supports the following systems:
- ThinkPad X61 Tablet

The following operating systems are supported:
- Microsoft Windows Vista 32-bit and 64-bit (*1)
- Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005

Notes:
(*1) If Windows Vista 64-bit is already installed on your system, then you must use the bootable CD ISO format of this BIOS update.
- This program is language independent and can be used with any language system.

Additional information

Notes:

  • This package does not work on Windows Vista 64-bit systems. Use the BIOS Update CD for BIOS updates for Windows Vista 64-bit systems.
  • If you use Windows Vista, before applying this BIOS into the system, you should install Windows Vista KB 937500. The information of KB937500 is located in the following Microsoft's site.

To verify if KB937500 is installed properly,

  1. Click Start, then click Control Panel.
  2. Find Programs and Features and click. If this option does not exist on the window, choose Classic View to find it.
  3. On Tasks pane, click on View installed updates.
  4. Verify that KB937500 is included in the list of installed updates.

  • (Fix) The computer may hang if Rescue and Recovery is installed on Windows Vista 64-bit SP1.

  • (Fix) When a certain HDD User Password is set, re-boot may fail. (BIOS)

Version 7SET22WW (1.08)

  • (Fix) When Load Defaults(F9) in BIOS Setup is performed, AMT SOL(Serial-Over-LAN) session may be disconnected. (BIOS)
  • (Fix) The brightness becomes maximum at the start of Windows XP even if the maximum brightness has not been set with Fn+End key in previous session. (BIOS)
  • (Fix) When Power button of Power Options in Control panel is set to Do nothing for When I close the lid of my portable computer: in Extended desktop, Extended desktop is kept even by closing portable computer. (BIOS)

Version 7SET21WW (1.07)

  • (Fix) An error message may be displayed after the system with smart battery entered Intel(R) AMT Management Engine BIOS Extention screen. (BIOS)
  • (Fix) Transmission speed of HDD/SSD may get slow in AHCI mode of SATA. (BIOS)
  • (Fix) Intermittent errors, such as device unrecognized, may occur at wake-up after BIOS configuration was changed in BIOS Setup during hibenation. (BIOS)
  • (Fix) A Post error may intermittently occur at wake-up from hibernation after ThinkPad BIOS Setting for Windows was run. (BIOS)

Version 7SET20WW (1.06)

Important:

BIOS priority order of BIOS Setup Utility will be changed from that of the previous one after the BIOS is updated to 7SET20WW.

BIOS Setup Utility: Startup->Boot/Network->Boot priority order. It is necessary to return the BIOS setup parameters to the default by pressing F9(Setup Default).

  • (Fix) Unexpected display modes may be selected with docking station on Windows Vista. (BIOS)
  • (Fix) SMBIOS type22(Battery information) handling on PC with damaged battery was improved. (BIOS)
  • (Fix) Fingerprint authentication fails once at power-on time, power-on password prompt appears immediately. (BIOS)
  • (Fix) Memory address more than 4GB can't be accessed under Vista WindowsPE. (BIOS)

  • (Fix) Trackpoint may not work after undocking from docking station with PS/2 mouse.

Updating the BIOS
Notes:
  • If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the BIOS. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Version Information section.
  • You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack.
  • If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
  • If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to your computer, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
  • Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in the RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) or similar environment.

Attention:
Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU DO THAT WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.

Manual Update
  1. Print these instructions or display on another computer.
  2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
  3. Start Windows Vista, XP and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer.
  4. Double-click 7suj17us.exe to extract it to your hard drive.
    The default location is C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7suj17us.
  5. For Windows Vista, click Start, select All Programs, select Accessories, then click Run....
    For Windows XP, click Start, then click Run....
  6. Specify WINUPTP.EXE with the full path name where you saved the package, then click OK.
    Example: C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7suj17us\WINUPTP.EXE
  7. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  8. Select Update ThinkPad BIOS and follow the instructions on the screen.
  9. After the update has been completed, the program shows a message Flash Update has been successfully completed....
    Follow the instructions on the screen to restart the computer.
Unattended Update

Note:
This procedure is intended only for system administrators. The BIOS is updated without any user interaction.

  • Refer to the Manual Update section, and download and extract the files.
  • At the command line, execute WINUPTP.EXE with the -S option. Example: C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7suj17us\WINUPTP -s

To view the update result, refer to the WINUPTP.log file created at the same directory of the package.

Initializing the BIOS
BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS settings:
  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer.
  3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key.
    The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  4. Press the F9 key to load default configuration.
  5. Select Yes.
  6. Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit.
  7. Select Yes.
  8. Restart the computer.

Notes:

  • After initialization you may need to reapply some settings that you had changed previously.

BIOS information
Each version of the System Program Service Utility contains the following system program (BIOS) and the Embedded Controller program. The BIOS Version and the date can be viewed by running ThinkPad Configuration from your operating system and selecting the System Information button or by invoking the BIOS Setup Utility.
  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer.
  3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key.
  4. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  5. Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version.
  6. Turn off the computer.

Memory Map information
Reserved Area

The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by the BIOS and others. (When Intel Turbo Memory is installed in your system, conventional memory addresses are reserved 12 Kbytes more.)

  • C0000-CFFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS
  • D0000-D1FFF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*a)
  • E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS

Notes:

  • *a: This area becomes free by disabling the Ethernet LAN Option ROM option under Config and Network in the BIOS Setup Utility. This choice will disable PXE and WOL features.

Usable Area
The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386.
  • D2000-DFFFF

Note: Certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems. The addresses vary and depend on the design of each Operating System.
