To determine if this BIOS applies to your ThinkPad R61 or R61i system you may use either of the following methods:

• Pressing F1 at startup:
  • Press F1 during startup. The initial BIOS screen will display the BIOS version. If the BIOS version begins with 7K this BIOS is supported on this system. If the BIOS version begins with 7L the BIOS is supported on the R61 with IEEE 1394.
• Using the ThinkPad Configuration Utility:
  1. Click Start.
  2. Select All Programs, select ThinkVantage, then click ThinkPad Configuration.
  3. In the upper left corner, click System Information.
  4. If the BIOS version begins with 7K this BIOS is supported on this system. If the BIOS version begins with 7L, click here for the BIOS supported on your system.
     

NOTES

• If you update to the BIOS version 2.07-1.08 or later, you are not able to get back to the older BIOS versions.
• You should install the CD/DVD/BD writing software which supports CD/DVD/BD creation function from the ISO image file to create the BIOS Update CD.
• You should have an internal type of optical drive to boot the computer from the BIOS Update CD. Any types of USB, PC Card, CardBus PC Card, ExpressCard optical drive or Ultrabay optical drive for Docking Station are not supported.
• To boot the computer from the BIOS Update CD, you may need to change the boot device setting in your ThinkPad computer. Refer to the Prepare boot device section in this document.
• The contents of the BIOS Update CD can not be shown by Windows Explorer.
• If you use Windows Vista, before applying this BIOS into the system, you should install Windows Vista KB 937500. The information of KB937500 is located in the following Microsoft's site.
  To verify if KB937500 is installed properly,
  1. Click Start, then click Control Panel.
  2. Find Programs and Features and click. If this option does not exist on the window, choose Classic View to find it.
  3. On Tasks pane, click on View installed updates.
  4. Verify that KB937500 is included in the list of installed updates.
• (Limitation) The secondary hard disk with hard disk password may not be detected when the following procedures are done on Windows Vista.
  1. Set the hard disk password in a secondary hard disk.
  2. Hot-attach the secondary hard disk to the computer.
  3. Go into standby mode and then resume normal operation to let Windows Vista recognize the hard disk.
  4. Input the hard disk password when a password prompt for the secondary hard disk appears.
  5. After the Windows desktop appears, double-click the Computer icon. But, the secondary hard disk may not be detected.

1. Prepare a computer with an optical drive installed and a blank CD/DVD/BD disc, and make sure the CD/DVD/BD writing software is installed into the computer.
2. Start Windows.
3. Download the ISO file.
4. For Windows Vista, click Start, then click Start Search.
   For Windows XP, 2000, click Start, then click Run....
5. Specify the path where you downloaded the file, then click OK. A recording software will open.
   Example: C:\temp\7kuj27uc.iso
6. Follow the instructions on the screen.
   
   

Confirm that an optical drive is in the boot device list of your BIOS setup.

1. Power off the computer.
2. Power on the computer.
3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
4. Choose Startup from the menu.
5. Choose Boot from the menu. Note the current boot priority order for restoration later if you need to modify your boot list.
6. In Boot Priority Order, make sure ATAPI CD0 is on top of ATA HDD0.
7. Press the F3 key to exit, or press the F10 key to save the new setup and then select Yes.
8. Restart the computer.

• If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the BIOS. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Version Information section.
• You need an AC adapter, a charged battery pack and an internal optical drive for ThinkPad computer.
• If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
• Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in the RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) or similar environment.

Attention:
Do not turn off, suspend the computer or remove the BIOS UPDATE CD until the update has been completed. IF YOU DO THAT WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.

1. Print these instructions or display on another system.
2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the system.
3. Make sure your ThinkPad computer has an optical drive installed.
4. Insert the BIOS Update CD into the optical drive and turn on the computer.
5. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information.
6. Press the Esc key to return to the menu.
7. Select Update system program and follow the instructions on the screen.
8. After the information panel appears, remove the BIOS Update CD from the optical drive then press the Enter key to restart the computer.
   
   

1. Turn off the computer.
2. Turn on the computer.
3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
4. Press the F9 key to load default configuration.
5. Select Yes.
6. Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit.
7. Select Yes.
8. Restart the computer.

Notes:

• After initialization you may need to re-apply some settings that you had changed previously.

4. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If you have set a supervisor password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you enter the password.
