BIOS Update Utility - ThinkPad R61 15 inch models (8942, 8943, 8944, 8945, 8947, 8948, 8949)

This BIOS Update Utility updates the BIOS (system program including the Embedded Controller (EC) program) stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.
This release supports the following systems: (*1) - ThinkPad R61 (15 inch normal screen models) - ThinkPad R61i (15 inch normal screen models)
Note: *1: Applicable for certain models only, please refer to the Supported system list in the readme file for more details. The following operating systems are supported: - Microsoft Windows 7 32-bit - Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit (*1)(*2) - Microsoft Windows Vista 32-bit - Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit (*1)(*2) - Microsoft Windows XP (Home Edition and Professional)
Notes: *1: Windows Vista and 7 64-bit support Intel Core 2 Duo mobile processors only. *2: If Windows Vista or 7 64-bit is already installed on your system, then you must use the bootable CD ISO format of this BIOS update. |

Note: To use this feature, you need to install the following drivers.
- Power Manager for Windows Vista (Version 2.30 or higher) or Power Manager for Windows XP/2000 (Version 1.40 or higher)
- ThinkPad Power Management Driver for Windows 98 SE/Me/2000/ XP/Vista (Version 1.44 or higher)
- (Fix) The computer may hang if Rescue and Recovery is installed on Windows Vista 64-bit SP1.

- *Note: A serial and a parallel port on the Mini-Dock will be disabled with this setup.

- (New) Added the new error code 1830 to indicate that a single DIMM is not installed in the memory slot 0. Solution for the error code: With a single DIMM, install the DIMM into the memory slot 0 (a slot different from having used it).

(New) (Intel video models only) A design change that the screen is set to extended desktop mode with an external display and "When I close the lid of my portable computer" option in the power option is set to "Do nothing", and when the lid is closed:
- (Old) The extended display mode is canceled and video output is switched to the external display only, so icons on the desktop will be moved.
- (New) The extended display mode is kept and video output is not switched, so icons on the desktop are not moved.

- (New) An error may happen during the BIOS update.
- (Fix) Resuming normal operation from hibernation mode may fail with Intel Turbo Memory on Windows Vista.
- (Fix) The screen resolution of external display attached to the docking station will be changed after undocking/docking the computer.
Note: To resolve this problem, the following display driver must be installed, as well as the BIOS update. - Intel Display Driver (Intel 940GML/945GM/GL960/GM965) Version 6.14.10.4860 or higher.
- (Fix) Improvement of handling of SMBIOS type 22 (Battery information) with damaged battery.

Notes:
- Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment.
- You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS.
- If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
- If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to your computer, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
- Print these instructions or display on another computer.
- Print these instructions or display on another computer.
- Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
- Start Windows 7 32-bit, Vista 32-bit, XP and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer.
- Double-click 7quj15us.exe to extract it to your hard drive. The default location is C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7quj15us.
- For Windows 7 and Vista, click Start, select All Programs, select Accessories, then click Run... For Windows XP, click Start, then click Run...
- Specify WINUPTP.EXE with the full path name where you saved the package, then click OK. Example: C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7quj15us\WINUPTP.EXE
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
- Select Update ThinkPad BIOS and follow the instructions on the screen.
- After the update has been completed, the program shows a message Flash Update has been successfully completed.... Follow the instructions on the screen to restart the computer.
Unattended Update
This procedure is intended only for system administrators. The BIOS is updated without any user interaction.
- Refer to the Manual Update section, and download and extract the files.
- At the command line, execute WINUPTP.EXE with the -S option. Example: C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7quj15us\WINUPTP -s
To view the update result, refer to the WINUPTP.log file created at the same directory of the package.
BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS settings:
- Turn off the system.
- Turn on the system.
- While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key.
- The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If you have set a supervisor password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you enter the password.
- Press the F9 key to load default configuration.
- Select Yes.
- Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit.
- Select Yes.
Notes:
- After initialization you may need to reapply some settings that you had changed previously.
- After the initialization has been completed, the system restarts automatically.
Each version of the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility contains the following system program (BIOS) and the Embedded Controller program. The BIOS Version and the Embedded Controller version number can be viewed by entering the BIOS Setup Utility.
- Turn off the system.
- Turn on the system.

The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by the BIOS and others.
- C0000-CFFFF: Reserved for Video BIOS
- D0000-D1FFF: Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*2)
- E0000-FFFFF: Reserved for System BIOS
Note: *2 - This area becomes free by disabling the Ethernet LAN Option ROM option under Config and Network in the BIOS Setup Utility. This choice will disable PXE and WOL features.
The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386.
D2000-DFFFF
Note: Certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems. The addresses vary and depend on the design of each Operating System.
