BIOS Update Utility - ThinkPad R61e, R61i (type 7650) 15.4 inch widescreen models without IEEE 1394
Applicable countries and regions
This BIOS Update Utility updates the BIOS (system program including the Embedded Controller (EC) program) stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.

The following operating systems are supported:
- Microsoft Windows 7 32-bit
- Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit (*1)(*2)
- Microsoft Windows Vista 32-bit
- Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit (*1)(*2)
- Microsoft Windows XP (Home Edition and Professional)

Notes:
*1: Windows Vista and 7 64-bit support Intel Core 2 Duo mobile processors only.
*2: If Windows Vista or 7 64-bit is already installed on your system, then you must use the BIOS Update CD for the BIOS update.

This release supports the following systems:
  • ThinkPad R61e
  • ThinkPad R61i 15.4 inch widescreen models without IEEE 1394
    • 7650

Notes:

  • If you update to the BIOS version 2.07-1.08 or later, you are not able to get back to the older BIOS versions.
  • This package does not work on Windows Vista 64-bit systems. Use the BIOS Update CD for BIOS updates for Windows Vista 64-bit systems.
  • (Limitation) The secondary hard disk with hard disk password may not be detected when the following procedures are done on Windows Vista.
  1. Set the hard disk password in a secondary hard disk.
  2. Hot-attach the secondary hard disk to the computer.
  3. Go into standby mode and then resume normal operation to let Windows Vista recognize the hard disk.
  4. Input the hard disk password when a password prompt for the secondary hard disk appears.
  5. After the Windows desktop appears, double-click the Computer icon. But, the secondary hard disk may not be detected.

  • (Fix) A Bluetooth LED is On on the computer without the Bluetooth card installed.

Installation instructions
Notes:
  • If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the BIOS. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Version Information section.
  • Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment.
  • You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS.
  • If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
  • If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to your computer, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.

Attention:
Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU DO THAT WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.

Manual Update
  1. Print these instructions or display on another computer.
  2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
  3. Start Windows 7 32-bit, Vista 32-bit, XP, 2000 and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer.
  4. Double-click 7puj14us.exe to extract it to your hard drive. The default location is C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7puj14us.
  5. For Windows 7 and Vista, click Start, select All Programs, select Accessories, then click Run... For Windows XP, click Start, then click Run...
  6. Specify WINUPTP.EXE with the full path name where you saved the package, then click OK. Example: C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7puj14us\WINUPTP.EXE
  7. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  8. Select Update ThinkPad BIOS and follow the instructions on the screen.
  9. After the update has been completed, the program shows a message Flash Update has been successfully completed.... Follow the instructions on the screen to restart the computer.
Unattended Update

This procedure is intended only for system administrators. The BIOS is updated without any user interaction.

  • Refer to the Manual Update section, and download and extract the files.
  • At the command line, execute WINUPTP.EXE with the -S option.
    Example: C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7puj14us\WINUPTP -s

To view the update result, refer to the WINUPTP.log file created at the same directory of the package.

Initializing the BIOS
BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS settings:
  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer.
  3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  4. Press the F9 key to load default configuration.
  5. Select Yes.
  6. Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit.
  7. Select Yes.
  8. Restart the computer.

Notes:

  • After initialization you may need to reapply some settings that you had changed previously.

BIOS information
Each version of the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility contains the following system program (BIOS) and the Embedded Controller program. The BIOS Version and the Embedded Controller version number can be viewed by entering the BIOS Setup Utility.
  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer.
  3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  4. Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version.
  5. Turn off the computer.

Memory Map information
Reserved Area

The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by the BIOS and others.

  • C0000-CFFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS
  • D0000-D1FFF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*a)
  • E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS

Note: (*a) This area becomes free by disabling the Ethernet LAN Option ROM option under Config and Network in BIOS Setup Utility. This choice will disable PXE and WOL features.

Usable Area

The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386.

  • D2000-DFFFF

Note: Certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems. The addresses vary and depend on the design of each Operating System.
