BIOS update utility - ThinkPad W700, W700ds
Applicable countries and regions
This BIOS Update Utility updates the BIOS (system program including the Embedded Controller (EC) program) stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.

This release supports the following systems:
- ThinkPad W700, W700ds

The following operating systems are supported:
- Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit
- Microsoft Windows Vista 32-bit and 64-bit
- Microsoft Windows XP (Home Edition and Professional)
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

NOTES

  1. If you use Windows Vista, you should install Windows Vista KB 937500 before applying this BIOS into your ThinkPad computer. The information of KB937500 is available in the following Microsoft's site.

To verify if KB937500 is installed properly,

  1. Click Start, then click Control Panel.
  2. Find Programs and Features and click. If this option does not exist on the window, choose Classic View to find it.
  3. On Tasks pane, click on View installed updates.
  4. Verify that KB937500 is included in the list of installed updates.

Summary of changes

Version 2.08-1.05

  • (New) Added support for Microsoft Windows 7.

  • (New) Removed the [ctrl-p] prompt screen for Intel Management Engine BIOS Extension feature from the boot screen to save system boot time. (Hint) To enter the Intel Management Engine BIOS Extension screen, refer to 1 of the "New Feature Instruction" sction.
  • (New) Added support for MRC 2.7
  • (Fix) Fixed an issue where the system with BitLocker Drive Encryption feature enabled might reject a correct Personal Identification Number on Windows Vista.
  • (Fix) Fixed an issue where a part of WMI might not be usable.

Version 2.03-1.05

  • (New) Added support for ThinkVantage Hardware Password Manager feature.
    • Note: If this new function is still activated and when you try to get back to the older BIOS versions without the new function, the following message will be displayed. This is to prevent the new function from being deactivated.
      • BIOS Update CD: "Error The system program file is not correct for this system"
      • BIOS Update Utility: "The process does not recognize this system.The utility process has not completed."
    • To get back to such the older BIOS versions, you must deactivate the new function before applying the BIOS.
  • (Fix) Fixed an issue that AMT menu of BIOS Setup Utility might not be displayed.
  • (Fix) Fixed an issue that a Bitlocker message to enter password might be displayed after encryption of the device was completed.

    • Note: Disabling PCI Express power management may fix troubles on using the PCI Express card, however, reduces battery life by several minutes.
  • (Fix) Some CardBus and IEEE 1394 devices may have slow performance.
  • (Fix) (ThinkPad W700 with the BIOS version 1.53 only) The display device may not be changed from the LCD to the display port.

  • (Fix) Some USB devices, ex. USB camera, may not work after system restart, when a battery charge is disabled by Power Manager.

Installation instructions
Notes:
  • If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the BIOS. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Version Information section.
  • You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS.
  • If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
  • Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in the RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) or similar environment.

Attention:
Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU DO THAT WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.

Manual Update

Manual Update

This section assumes to use Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.

[Downloading file]

  1. Click once on the underlined file name. Once this is done, some pop-up windows will appear.
  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  3. In the window to choose Run or Save, click the Save button.
  4. Choose the folder you would like to download the file to and click the Save button. A different window will appear and the download will begin and complete. Once the download has completed, there may or may not be a message stating that the download completed successfully.

[Extracting file]

  1. Make sure to be logged on with administrative privileges on the target computer.
  2. Make sure the AC adapter is firmly connected to the target computer.
  3. Locate the folder where the file was downloaded.
  4. Locate the file that was downloaded and double-click it. The file name ends with "US.EXE" for 32-bit, "U6.EXE" for 64-bit Windows.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  6. In the Select Destination Location window, click Next. If you would like to select a different folder, click Browse.
  7. In the Ready to Install window, click Install. All the necessary files will be extracted to the folder selected in Extracting File Step 5.

[Updating the BIOS]

  1. Make sure the checkbox next to Install ..... now is checked and click Finish.
  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  3. Select Update ThinkPad BIOS and follow the instructions on the screen.
  4. After the update has been completed, the program shows a message Flash Update has been successfully completed. . Follow the instructions on the screen to restart the computer.

Finally delete the file saved in Downloading File Step 4.

Unattended Update

Note: This procedure is intended only for system administrators.The BIOS is updated without any user interaction.

  1. Refer to the Manual Update section, and download and extract the file.
  2. In Step 1 of the Installing files section, uncheck the checkbox next to Install ..... now, and then click Finish to cancel installation.
  3. At the command line, execute WINUPTP.EXE with the -s option. Example: [Path where the files were extracted]\WINUPTP -s]

To view the update result, refer to the WINUPTP.log file created at the same directory of the package.


Initializing the BIOS
BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS settings:
  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the system.
  3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key.
    The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  4. Press the F9 key to load default configuration.
  5. Select Yes.
  6. Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit.
  7. Select Yes.
  8. Restart the computer.

Notes:

  • After initialization you may need to reapply some settings that you had changed previously.
New Feature Instruction
How to enter the Intel Management Engine BIOS Extension screen:

To save system boot time, the [ctrl-p] prompt for Intel Management Engine BIOS Extension screen was removed from the boot screen. Instead of the [ctrl-p] prompt, the following new entries were added in the Boot Menu shown by pressing the F12 key at boot.
- [enter ME Configuration Screens]
- [initiate a Remote Connection]

To enter the Intel Management Engine BIOS Extension screen, do the following.

  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer.
  3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F12 key. A Boot Menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  4. Select Enter ME Configuration Screens or Initiate a Remote Connection.

Notes:

  • The new entries in the Boot Menu are shown on the ThinkPad models with Intel vPro supported/enabled only.
  • The Boot Menu may be suppressed by the BIOS Setup.
BIOS information
Each version of the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility contains the following system program (BIOS) and the Embedded Controller program. The BIOS Version and the and the the Embedded Controller version number can be viewed by entering the BIOS Setup Utility.
  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the system.
  3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key.
    The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  4. Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version.
  5. Turn off the system.

Memory Map information
Reserved Area

The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by the BIOS and others. (When Intel Turbo Memory is installed in your system, conventional memory addresses are reserved 11k bytes more.)

  • C0000-CFFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS
  • D0000-D1FFF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*a)
  • D2000-D5FFF : Reserved for Option ROM of RAID (*b)
  • DE000-DF7FF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*c)
  • E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS

Notes:

  • *a: This area becomes free by disabling the Ethernet LAN Option ROM option under Config and Network in the BIOS Setup Utility. This choice will disable PXE and WOL features.
  • *b: This area becomes free by setting Serial ATA Controller Mode to AHCI or Compatibility in the BIOS Setup Utility. This choice will disable RAID features.
  • *c: This area becomes free by disabling the USB BIOS Option ROM option under Config and USB in the BIOS Setup Utility. This choice will disable booting from USB device and other USB BIOS features.

The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386.

  • D6000-DDFFF
  • DF800-DFFFF

Notes:

  • Certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems. The addresses vary and depend on the design of each Operating System.
