II. Installation instructions
NOTES:
- You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program.
- If your computer is attached to any kinds of Docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.

Before using Flash Update with Windows 98 Second Edition, IBM recommends that you download and apply the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from the Microsoft Support WWW Site. This supplement and information regarding this supplement can be found at: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q239/8/87 .ASP
- After you have opened the above link, click on http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/corporate.asp
- Scroll down to Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement and click it.
- Click Next.
- If you agree, Accept the License to download the file.
- Run the executable that you just downloaded.
- Print these instructions or display on another computer.
- Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
- Start Windows 95/98/2000/Me or Windows NT 4.0 on the target computer.
- Make the temporary directory on the hard drive (for instance, C:\Temp)
- Download the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility from the web site and store the file into the temporary directory. (e.g. C:\Temp)
- Click Start, then click Run.
- Specify filename with the full path name where you stored ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility. (E.g. C:\Temp\IUUJ04US.EXE) Then press Enter.
- Follow the instructions. Windows shutting down automatically and System Program Service Diskette screen appears.
- Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears.
- Press the Esc key to return to the menu.
- Select Update system program and follow the instruction on the screen.
Warning: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.
After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off. Do the following to make the changes effective.
- Make sure the no diskette is inserted in the diskette drive.
- Turn on the computer. The system enters IBM BIOS Setup Utility automatically.
- If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
- Press F9 key.
- Select Yes to load default configuration.

BIOS information can be viewed at the IBM BIOS Setup Utility screen:
- Power on the system.
- When the message Press F1 for IBM BIOS setup Utility appears in the bottom right hand corner, press the F1 key.
- Wait for the IBM BIOS Setup Utility screen to appear. The BIOS version is displayed at System BIOS Version line.
