II. Installation instructions
NOTES:

• You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program.
• If your computer is attached to any kinds of Docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
• Before using Flash Update with Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, IBM recommends that you download and apply the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from the Microsoft Support WWW Site. This supplement and information regarding this supplement can be found at: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q239/8/87.ASP

1. Print these instructions or display on another computer.
2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
3. Start Windows 95/98/2000 or Windows NT 4.0 on the target computer.
4. Download the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility by right-clicking on the file name above and select Save Target as or Save Link as. To make updating easier, save the file to your Windows desktop.
5. Find the file on your Windows desktop and double click with the left mouse button to start the installation process.
6. Follow the instructions on the screen. Windows should shut down automatically and System Program Service screen appears.
7. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears.
8. Press the Esc key to return to the menu screen.
9. Select Update system program and follow the instruction on the screen.
   
   Warning : Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.
   
   
10. After the update has been completed, turn the system off.
11. Press and hold the F1 key, then turn on the computer. Hold the F1 key until the Easy-Setup menu appears.
12. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
13. Select Config, then select Initialize.
14. Select OK to initialize the system.
15. Press the Esc key to exit Config and turn off the computer.

III. Known limitations
To execute this package on Windows 95, the following modules are required:

• MSVCRT.DLL
  
• MFC42.DLL

IV. BIOS information with links to previous BIOS releases
Each version of the BIOS update diskette contains the following system program information.

1. Power on the system.
2. When the message Press F1 for IBM BIOS setup Utility appears at the bottom right hand corner, press the F1 key. Wait for the BIOS Utility screen to appears.
3. Select System Information. BIOS version is displayed at System BIOS Version line.

1. Hold down the F1 key on the ThinkPad and power on the system.
2. Open the Config icon.
3. Open the Quick Boot icon.
4. Set Simple Boot Flag to Enable or Disable depending on configuration.

VIII. Windows 2000 diskette drive/drive letter handling
Diskette drive and drive letter handling under Windows 2000 environment has been changed to fixed drive letter assignment.

• External diskette drive letter : A drive (A:)
  
• Ultraslim Bay diskette drive letter : B drive (B:)

IX. Boot Menu
When this option is enabled a startup Boot Menu will appear allowing you to choose the bootable device. This function is enabled or disabled via the Easy Setup option in BIOS. Enabling or disabling the Boot Menu:

1. Power off the system.
2. Press and hold the F1 on the ThinkPad keyboard, and power on the system. This will bring up the Easy Setup menu screen.
3. Click the Config icon.
4. Click the Boot Menu F12 icon.
5. Select enable or disable and click OK .
6. Click Exit to leave the Config menu.
7. Click Startup , then click Power-on .
8. If any items are selected, these are the items that will appear in the Startup Menu. If no items are selected, all startable items will appear in the menu.
9. Click OK to close the Startup devices selection list.
10. Click Exit to close the startup mode selection list.
11. Click Restart then OK to restart the system.

1. Shutdown the system so that it is powered off.
2. Press and hold the F12 key while powering on the system. The Boot Menu should appear. Use the up and down arrow keys to select the boot device.
