This ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility updates the system BIOS program stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.
This release supports the following ThinkPad systems:
- i Series 1200 Machine type 1161 (Models - 21x, 23x, 25x, 26x, 45N, 65N, RR1, RR2, RR3, RR4, RR5, RR6, RR7, RR8, WPM)
- i Series 1300 Machine type 1171 (Models - 310, 320, 330, 337, 33F, 340, 350, 370, 377, 37F, NMU, RRA, RR6, RR7, RR8, RR9, VC1, VC2)
- 130 Machine type 1171 (Models - 334, 335, 374, 375)
The following Microsoft operating systems are supported:
- Windows 98 and 98 SE
- Windows 2000
- Windows XP
Notes:
- Your Machine Type and Model (MTM) is located on the bottom of your system, just above the bar code symbol.
- If your specific model is not listed, please enter your MTM on the Personal computing support home page, and refer to the product description. Look for the "Based on" model. |

II. Installation instructions
NOTES:
- You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program.
- If your computer is attached to any kind of USB port hub, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
- Before using this BIOS Update Utility with Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, IBM recommends applying the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from the Microsoft Web site Knowledge Base Article ID Q239887
- Print these instructions or display them on another computer.
- Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
- Start Windows 98/2000 on the target computer.
- Make the temporary directory on the hard disk drive. (for example, C:\Temp)
- Download the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility from the web site and store the file into the temporary directory. (for example, C:\Temp)
- Click Start, then click Run.
- In the Open dialogue box, specify the utility filename with the full path name where you stored ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility. (for example, C:\Temp\filename.exe) Then press the Enter key.
- Follow the instructions. Windows shuts down automatically and the System Program Service Utility screen appears.
- When prompted press the 1 key to update the system program.
Warning: Do not turn off the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.

*1 This BIOS version can be viewed by invoking the IBM BIOS setup utility.
*2 This BIOS version can be viewed by invoking the NoteBook Manager application.
The BIOS Version can be viewed by selecting System Information in the BIOS Utility menu:
- Power on the system.
- When the message "Press F1 for IBM BIOS setup utility" appears at the bottom left hand corner, press the F1 key. The BIOS Utility screen will appear.
- Select System Information. The BIOS version is displayed at System BIOS Version line.
