BIOS update II (Non-diskette) - ThinkPad 1200, 1300
Applicable countries and regions
This ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility updates the system BIOS program stored in certain ThinkPad i Series systems to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.

This release supports the following systems:

- ThinkPad i Series 1200 Machine Type 1161 (Models - 11x, 41x, 46N, 51x, 56N, 61x, 66N, 71x, 91x, 12x, 42x, 62x, 92x , 72x, 47N, 57N, 67N)
- ThinkPad i Series 1300 Machine Type 1171 (Models - 2AU, 21U, 61F, 61G, 61M, 61U, 71U, 81G, 81M, 91F, 91U, 5Wx, 7Wx, 6Lx, 9Lx, 5BU) *1
- ThinkPad 130 1171 (Models - 51J, 61J, 71J, 81J, 52J, 62J, 72J, 82J)

The supported operating systems for this update utility are as follows:
- Microsoft Windows 98, 98 Second Edition and Me
- Microsoft Windows 2000
- Microsoft Windows XP

NOTES:
*1 1171-21U, 2AU, 71U supports Windows Me/2000 only.
- Your machine type is located on the bottom of your system, just above the bar code symbol.
- This program is language independent and can be used with any language system.

II. Installation instructions
NOTES:

  • You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program.
  • If your computer is attached to any kind of USB port hub, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
  • Before using this BIOS Update Utility with Windows 98 Second Edition, IBM recommends applying the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from the Microsoft Web site Knowledge Base Article ID Q239887.
  1. Print these instructions or display them on another computer.
  2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
  3. Start a supported version of Windows on the target computer.
  4. Make the temporary directory on the hard drive (for example, C:\Temp).
  5. Download the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility from the Web site and store the file into the temporary directory.
  6. Click Start, then clickRun.
  7. In the Open dialog box, specify the utility filename with the full path name where you stored ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility (for example, C:\Temp\filename.exe). Then, press the Enter key.
  8. Follow the instructions on screen. Windows shuts down automatically and the System Program Service Diskette screen appears.
  9. When prompted, press the 1 key to update the system program.
  10. Follow the instructions on screen.

    WARNING: Do not turn off the computer until the update has been completed. If you turn off the computer while the update is still in progress, the system board may have to be replaced.

To view the BIOS version in the BIOS Utility menu:

  1. Power on the system.
  2. When the message Press F1 for IBM BIOS setup Utility appears at the bottom left-hand corner, press the F1 key. The BIOS Utility screen will appear.
  3. Select System Information. The BIOS version is displayed at the System BIOS Version line.
