PCI Ultra160 SCSI Adapter - Overview
Applicable countries and regions

General information

The IBM PCI ULTRA160 SCSI ADAPTER enables the attachment of today's highest-speed Ultra160 SCSI devices to network server computer systems, workstation systems, and commercial desktop computers. With data transfer speeds up to 160 MB/s(1) and the inclusion of features such as "Disconnect/Reconnect," the PCI Ultra160 SCSI Adapter accommodates the fastest storage devices with ease.

The overall system's throughput is further enhanced by the use of "Busmastering" Direct Memory Access (DMA). This feature lets the adapter control the transfer of data from the peripherals to the system memory, relieving the system processor of this time-consuming burden.

Capable of supporting up to 15 devices, connected by up to 12 meters total cable length, the IBM PCI Ultra160 SCSI Adapter can handle a combination of 8-bit and 16-bit drives (refer to the TECHNICAL INFORMATION section). The adapter also supports the attachment of bootable storage devices to the faster SCSI bus and is compatible with SCSI, SCSI-2, or SCSI-3 protocols.

The PCI Ultra160 SCSI Adapter option kit provides a "ready-to-go" solution complete with:

  • 5-drop, terminated, internal Ultra160 SCSI cable
  • Cable for connecting the adapter to the system's Activity Indicator LED
  • Card-end brackets for use in standard or low-profile PCI card slots
  • Software to configure the system

This card works in low-profile or standard-height PCI card slots of 32 or 64-bit data path width(2).

The SCSISelect configuration utility resident in the adapter's BIOS allows simple, on-screen configuration of the adapter and eliminates the need to manipulate jumpers or terminators during installation.

The PCI Ultra160 SCSI Adapter is an excellent solution for today's high- speed, high-performance computer systems and will continue to be a valuable system asset for years to come. This offering is covered by a three-year limited warranty(3). When installed in IBM PCs, it is also covered by the system's warranty, which may include on-site service for 1 up to three years.

Software requirements

  • OS/2, V4.x
  • Microsoft Windows 95
  • Windows 98
  • Windows 3.1
  • Windows NT(R) V4.0
  • Windows for Workgroups 3
  • Windows 2000
  • NetWare 3.1x, 4.1x, 4.2, and 5.1
  • SCO Open Server 5.0.5
  • UnixWare 7.0.1

Compatibility
The IBM PCI Ultra160 SCSI Adapter is compatible with devices that comply with ANSI SCSI-2 Standard X3.131-1994 and meets Windows 98 requirements. The IBM PCI Ultra160 SCSI Adapter also includes device support for HDDs, removable disk drives, magneto-optical drives,CD-ROM drives, tape and DAT drives, and scanners.

Limitations
he IBM PCI Ultra160 SCSI Adapter supports HDD capacities up to 8 GB under DOS extended translation. HDD capacity is unlimited under all other operating systems. When pre-Ultra2 devices including most 8-bit (narrow) SCSI devices are attached to an Ultra160 bus the data transfer rate for all Ultra2 and Ultra160 devices is reduced to a maximum of 40MB/sec. In such configurations the overall bus length is reduced to the pre-Ultra2 limit of three meters.
