BIOS Update (Non-Diskette) - ThinkPad A21e (2628)
Applicable countries and regions
This ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility updates the BIOS program stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.

This release supports the following systems:
- ThinkPad A21e (Machine Type 2628 only)
- ThinkPad i Series 1800 (2628-IAJ/2632-I1J)

The supported operating systems for this update utility are as follows:

- Microsoft Windows 95 OSR2 or later
- Microsoft Windows 98 and 98 Second Edition
- Microsoft Windows Me
- Microsoft Windows 2000
- Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3 or later
- Microsoft Windows XP

This program is language independent and can be used with any language system.

I. Summary of changes
Version KUET36WW (1.13)
  • (New) Have a BIOS option to disable the option of the built-in network card to expand a usable DOS memory area.
  • (New) Enahancement of the password security feature.
  • (Fix) (Windows 98)BIOS sometimes displays an error message at hibernation wakeup if a USB memory key is used in Windows 98.
  • (Fix) Boot priority for the network boot does not reset to the default setting, if the F9 key is pressed twice in IBM BIOS Setup Utility.

II. Installation instructions
Notes:
  • You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS.
  • If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
  • Before using this BIOS Update Utility with Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, IBM recommends applying the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from the Microsoft Web site Knowledge Base Article ID Q239887.
  1. Print these instructions or display on another computer.
  2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
  3. Start a supported version of Windows on the target computer.
  4. Make a temporary directory (for instance, C:\Temp) on the hard disk drive.
  5. Download the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility from the Web site and store the file into the temporary directory.
  6. Click the Start button, then click Run.
  7. In the Open dialogue box, specify the utility filename with the full path name where you stored ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility. (E.g. C:\Temp\filename.exe) Then press the Enter key.
  8. Follow the instructions.
  9. When completed, the system is automatically turned off.

    Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. If you turn off or suspend the computer while the update is still in progress, the system board may have to be replaced.

    After the update has been completed, do the following to make the changes effective.
  1. Make sure there is no diskette in the diskette drive, then turn on the computer.
  2. While the "Press F1 for IBM BIOS Setup Utility" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  3. Verify the BIOS version and date.
  4. Press the F9 key to load default configuration.
  5. Select Yes.
  6. Press the F10 key to save default configuration.
  7. Select Yes. The system will restart automatically.
III. System BIOS Information
Each version of the BIOS update diskette contains the following system program information.

The embedded controller manages the Power Management functions of the system.

* Embedded controller update is not in affect on the IBM BIOS Setup Utility.
The BIOS information can be viewed by invoking IBM BIOS Setup Utility.

  1. Make sure there is no diskette in the diskette drive, then turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer.
  3. While the "Press F1 for IBM BIOS Setup Utility" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  4. The BIOS version and date are displayed on the first screen of the IBM BIOS Setup Utility.
IV. Memory Information
The following information shows memory areas that are either unavailable or that can be included with a memory manager such as EMM386.

Reserved BIOS area
C0000-CBFFF (reserved for Video BIOS)
E0000-FFFFF (reserved for BIOS)

V. Known Limitations
To execute this package on Microsoft Windows 95, the following modules are required:
  • MSVCRT.DLL
  • MFC42.DLL
