This ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility updates the system BIOS program stored in certain ThinkPad i Series systems to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. This release supports the following systems:
- ThinkPad i Series 1200 Machine type 1161 (Models - 43*, 44*, 45U, 53M, 73J, 93*, 94*, 95*, 96*, 97A, EFH) - ThinkPad i Series 1300 Machine type 1171 (Models - 1TU, 1VU, 2TU, 3TU, 4**, 52U, 5CU, 5X*, 6MU, 6NU, 6XU, 7XG, 8MU, 8XU, 9B*, 9MU, 9NU, 9X*, 9ZU, NM1) - ThinkPad i Series 1300 Machine types 2666 and 2667 (Model - 43U)
The supported operating systems for this update utility are as follows:
- Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition - Microsoft Windows Me - Microsoft Windows 2000

I. Summary of changes

- (Fix) (Wireless Model) The system can not get the IP address from DHCP server intermittently.
- (Fix) BIOS may not be updated by using 1.24 - V1.00G BIOS update package.
Version 1.28 - V1.00K
- (Fix) (12.1inch LCD Model only) When a VGA mode that is not supported by 12.1inch LCD is selected, the screen becomes white blank.
Version 1.29 - V1.00L
- (Fix) (Windows Me) The system cannot fully resume from hibernation, when some MS-DOS prompt windows open.
Version 1.30 - V1.00M
- (New) Microsoft Windows XP Support.
Version 1.31 - V1.00N
- (Fix) (Korean/Japanese Microsoft Windows 2000) After installing Windows 2000 on the system with additional 128MB RAM, the system hangs displaying blue screen with error message.
Version 1.33 - V1.00P
- (Fix) The system cannot recognize some PC cards at boot time. -
- (Fix) The boot from LAN function is not available at BIOS setup menu.
II. Installation instructions
NOTES:
- You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program.
- If your computer is attached to any kind of USB port hub, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
- Before using this BIOS Update Utility with Windows 98 Second Edition, IBM recommends applying the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from the Microsoft Web site Knowledge Base Article ID Q239887.
- Print these instructions or display them on another computer.
- Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
- Start a supported version of Windows on the target computer.
- Make the temporary directory on the hard disk drive (for example, C:\Temp)
- Download the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility from the Web site and store the file into the temporary directory.
- Click Start, then clickRun.
- In the Open dialogue box, specify the utility filename with the full path name where you stored ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility. (For example, C:\Temp\filename.exe) Then press the Enter key.
- Follow the instructions on screen. Windows shuts down automatically and the System Program Service Diskette screen appears.
- When prompted press the 1 key to update the system program.
- Follow the instructions on screen.
WARNING: Do not turn off the computer until the update has been completed. If you turn off the computer while the update is still in progress, the systemboard may have to be replaced.

To view the BIOS version in the BIOS Utility menu:
- Power on the system.
- When the message Press F1 for IBM BIOS setup Utility appears at the bottom left hand corner, press the F1 key. The BIOS Utility screen will appear.
- Select System Information. The BIOS version is displayed at System BIOS Version line.
