Purpose
This ECA provides for the replacement of the AC adapter used to power the speakers that were shipped with a limited number of IBM systems between July, 1998 and March, 2001.

This ECA is mandatory.

This ECA applies to the EMEA and AP geographies ONLY.

CAUTION: Read this entire section before taking any action.
The speaker AC adapter is housed in a two-piece plastic enclosure. Handling this AC adapter may cause it to separate into two pieces, which could expose the user to a potential shock hazard. Extreme caution should be employed when handling or unplugging this AC adapter.

If the speaker AC adapter is plugged directly into an AC source such as a power strip or and Uninterruptible Power Source (UPS), either of which contains a power ON/OFF switch, please use this switch to power it off before disconnecting the speaker AC adapter.

If the speaker AC adapter is plugged directly into a wall AC power outlet, locate the circuit breaker supplying power to the outlet and turn the breaker OFF.

CAUTION: Before removing the speaker AC adapter from the socket, verify that power to this socket has been turned OFF.
Once it is verified that power has been removed from the speaker AC adapter, then unplug the adapter from the electric power source. Complete this procedure by disconnecting the detachable power cord from the back of the speaker.

Affected configurations
A system qualifies for this ECA if either of the following two conditions are met:

1. The speaker AC adapter part number is A40910B. This part number can be located in a yellow rectangle on the sixth line of the label on the speaker AC adapter, directly below a diamond-shaped symbol containing the text "SAC".

2. The speaker AC adapter displays model number 10K2588 or 20L2172. This model number is located on the first line of the label on the speaker AC adapter. This first line will contain the text "Model: 10K2588" or "Model: 20L2172".

Detail
The purpose of this ECA is to provide for the replacement of the AC adapter used to power the speakers that were shipped with a limited number of IBM systems between July, 1998 and March, 2001.

IBM is voluntarily recalling these specific speaker AC adapters used to power the speakers.

The speaker AC adapter is a small rectangular black plastic box that plugs into an electrical power source. This device has a thin black wire that connects to one of the speakers. The speaker AC adapter electronics are housed in a two-piece plastic enclosure. On some samples, these two pieces are not adequately fastened together and may detach. This may expose a user to a potential shock hazard. As a result IBM is recalling approximately 100,000 speaker AC adapters in the affected areas.

Solution
If the speaker AC adapter is one of those affected by this recall, IBM will replace the speaker AC adapter free of charge.

IBM also requests that, if the speaker AC adapter is one of those affected by this recall, immediately discontinue use of the speaker AC adapter. The replacement speaker AC adapter will include a postage-paid shipping label for the return to IBM of the original speaker AC adapter.

Parts disposition
The removed parts are the property of IBM and should be returned using the instructions and postage-paid return package provided with the new adapter.
