Some of these steps may not apply to your computer. Test the serial port after performing each step.
  1. Verify the cable is connected firmly to the ThinkPad system serial port by detaching and reattaching the connector.

  2. Verify the external device cable meets the manufacturer requirements.

  3. Verify the serial port is enabled and configured properly in the ThinkPad Configuration utility.
    1. Click Start, select Programs, select ThinkPad, select ThinkPad Utilities, and then click ThinkPad Configuration, or Click Start, select All Programs, select Access IBM, and then click ThinkPad Configuration.
    2. Click the Serial Port icon. The serial port window will appear.
    3. Select Enabled next to serial port, and then click Apply.
    4. Click the Allocated Resources tab to view the current resources allocated to the serial port.
      Notes:
      • The default setting for most ThinkPad systems is Input/Output range 03F8 - 03FF and IRQ 4.
      • If the current resources are not compatible with your external device, then click the Device Properties button on the General tab to change the settings in the operating system. The Communications port properties window will be displayed.
        1. Select the Resources tab.
        2. Click Use automatic settings to remove the check from the check box.
        3. Select Basic configuration 00x from the pull down list in the Setting based on: box. Select a basic configuration number to select other appropriate resources.
        4. Click OK and then click Yes to continue.

  4. Test the serial port for errors.
    1. Run the PC Doctor diagnostics for all current ThinkPad A, G, R, T, and X series systems. PC Doctor for DOS is available by pressing the F11 key or the Access IBM button during startup to access the predesktop menu area. If these methods are not available for your system, then PC Doctor for DOS may be downloaded. This DOS version requires two or more floppy diskettes depending on the ThinkPad system.
    2. Run the test in Easy Setup for ThinkPad 600, 600E, 770, 770E/ED, 770X, and 770Z systems.
      1. Press and hold the F1 key, then turn on the computer. Hold the F1 key until the Easy-Setup menu appears. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
      2. Select Test.
      3. Click the Serial symbol to run the test. The results will be displayed as blue OK or red error codes
