Troubleshooting mouse, TrackPoint, or UltraNav issues - ThinkPad
Applicable countries and regions

Some of these steps may not apply to your computer. Test the pointing device or mouse after performing each step.

  1. Verify that an external mouse is connected properly the ThinkPad system PS/2 port or USB port.
  • While a PS/2 interface external mouse can be attached directly to a ThinkPad system PS/2 port, the Keyboard/mouse connector (Option p/n 54G0441) should be used to attach a PS/2 interface external mouse and keyboard directly to a ThinkPad system PS/2 port.
    Notes:
    • The following is an example image of a ThinkPad system PS/2 port

  • The following ThinkPad systems do not have a PS/2 port and do not support PS/2 interface only devices:
    • A30/p, A31/p
    • R30, R31, R32, R40, R40e, R50, R50e, R50p, R51, R51e, R52, R60, R60e, R61
    • T30, T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p, T43, T43p, T60, T60p, T61
    • X20, X21, X22, X23, X24, X30, X31, X32, X40, X41, X41 Tablet, X60, X60s, X60 Tablet, X61, X61s, X61 Tablet
    • Z60m, Z60t, Z61e, Z61m, Z61p, Z61t
    • TransNote
  • A PS/2 port can be accessed when the ThinkPad is connected to a docking station or UltraBase dock.
  • A USB port and an operating system with USB support is required to attach a USB interface external mouse to a ThinkPad system.
    Notes:
    • Some USB pointing devices may require that the ThinkPad system internal TrackPoint be set to Disabled. See step three for how to change this setting.
    • The following is an example image of a ThinkPad system USB port
      USB port

  1. Verify that the external mouse is working properly.
  • Connect the external mouse to another computer and test its functionality.
  • Cleaning your mouse may help improve pointer movement with some mice that have a ball that tracks movement.
  • Replacing the batteries in your mouse may help improve pointer movement with some mice that are wireless.
  1. Verify that the internal TrackPoint or UltraNav is set to Automatic or AutoDisable.
Note: This setting will automatically disable the TrackPoint and UltraNav if an external PS/2 interface mouse is attached before startup.
To verify the setting in the BIOS for ThinkPad A, G, R, T, and X series systems
  1. Turn on the computer.
  2. Look for the message in the lower left area of the screen. If it says: "Press F1 for BIOS Setup Utility", press the F1 key. If it says: "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button", press the blue Access IBM button.
  3. Double-click Start setup utility if available.
For some systems, you may need to click Continue at the Rescue and Recovery Predesktop area screen, and click Access BIOS and Yes.
The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  4. Select Config and then click Keyboard/Mouse. The setting for the TrackPoint and UltraNav touch pad should be Automatic or AutoDisable.

To verify the setting in the ThinkPad Configuration utility:

  1. Click Start, select Programs, and look for ThinkPad, Access IBM or ThinkVantage.
    • If ThinkPad is in the list, select ThinkPad, select ThinkPad utilities, and then click ThinkPad Configuration.
    • If Access IBM is in the list, select Access IBM and then click ThinkPad Configuration.
    • If ThinkVantage is in the list, select ThinkVantage and then click ThinkPad Configuration.
  2. Click the TrackPoint icon

  3. Select Automatic or AutoDisable.
  4. Verify that the UltraNav and TrackPoint are set appropriately (Enabled or Disabled), by clicking Mouse properties and then the UltraNav or TrackPoint tab.
  1. Verify the latest driver from the manufacturer is installed for the respective mouse.
