Some of these steps may not apply to your computer. Test the pointing device or mouse after performing each step.
- Verify that an external mouse is connected properly the ThinkPad system PS/2 port or USB port.
-
While a PS/2 interface external mouse can be attached directly to a ThinkPad system PS/2 port, the Keyboard/mouse connector (Option p/n 54G0441) should be used to attach a PS/2 interface external mouse and keyboard directly to a ThinkPad system PS/2 port.
Notes:
- The following is an example image of a ThinkPad system PS/2 port

-

-
A USB port and an operating system with USB support is required to attach a USB interface external mouse to a ThinkPad system.
Notes:
- Some USB pointing devices may require that the ThinkPad system internal TrackPoint be set to Disabled. See step three for how to change this setting.
- The following is an example image of a ThinkPad system USB port

- Verify that the external mouse is working properly.
- Connect the external mouse to another computer and test its functionality.
- Cleaning your mouse may help improve pointer movement with some mice that have a ball that tracks movement.
- Replacing the batteries in your mouse may help improve pointer movement with some mice that are wireless.
- Verify that the internal TrackPoint or UltraNav is set to Automatic or AutoDisable.
Note: This setting will automatically disable the TrackPoint and UltraNav if an external PS/2 interface mouse is attached before startup.
To verify the setting in the BIOS for ThinkPad A, G, R, T, and X series systems
