Embedded Controller Program (Non-Diskette) - ThinkPad R50e, R51 (2883, 2887, 2888, 2889, 2894, 2895)

This Embedded Controller Program Update Utility updates the Embedded Controller Program (H8 controller firmware) stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.

This release supports the following systems:
- ThinkPad R50e
- ThinkPad R51(Machine Type 2883, 2887, 2888, 2889, 2894, and 2895) (*1)

Notes:
- (*1) Machine Type 1829, 1830, 1831 and 1836 of ThinkPad R51 family are not supported.
- For ThinkPad R50e users: This version of Embedded Controller Program will only work with BIOS Version 1.03 (or higher). A link to the BIOS is provided below.
- For ThinkPad R51 users: This version of Embedded Controller Program will only work with BIOS Version 1.17 (or higher). A link to the BIOS is provided below.
- If you need to update the BIOS as well as the Embedded Controller Program, update the BIOS first.

The supported operating systems are as follows:
- Microsoft Windows 2000
- Microsoft Windows XP

:

Notes:

For ThinkPad R50e users: This version of Embedded Controller Program will only work with BIOS Version 1.03 (or higher).
For ThinkPad R51 users: This version of Embedded Controller Program will only work with BIOS Version 1.17 (or higher).

  • (New) Improvement of battery control.
  • (Fix) After completing the Embedded Controller Program update and the system is automatically rebooted, the error message, "Operating System not found", may be displayed and reboot stops.

II. Installation instructions
Notes:
  • You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the Embedded Controller Program.
  • If your system is attached to any kind of port replicator, turn off the system and detach it before proceeding.
  • If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to your system, turn off the system and detach it before proceeding.
  • Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the Embedded Controller Program in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment.
  1. Print these instructions or display on another system.
  2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the system.
  3. Start Windows 2000/XP and logon with administrative privileges on the target system.
  4. Make the temporary directory on the hard disk drive (for instance, C:\Temp)
  5. Download the Embedded Controller Program Update Utility from the web site and store the file into the temporary directory.
  6. Click the Start button, then click Run.
  7. In the Open dialogue box, specify the utility filename with the full path name where you stored Embedded Controller Program Update Utility (Example: C:\Temp\1VHJ05US.EXE). Then click OK.
    Note:
    For unattended update, specify the file name with options "-s -a -s". (Example: C:\Temp\1VHJ05US.EXE -s -a -s) The BIOS is updated without any user interaction.
  8. Follow the instructions on screen.

    Depending on the operating system configuration, restarting the operating system and rerunning this Embedded Controller Program update utility may be required. In this case, the following message will appear.

    "DeviceIoControl() returns 2 Please restart your operating system and execute the BIOS or Embedded Controller update utility again." Windows will shut down automatically and ThinkPad Embedded Controller Program Update Utility screen appears.
  9. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears.
  10. Press the Esc key to return to the menu.
  11. Select Update embedded controller program and follow the instruction on the screen.

    Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the system until the update has been completed. If you turn off or suspend the system while the update is still in progress, the system board may have to be replaced.

    After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off.

III. Determining which version is installed
Each version of the Embedded Controller Program Update Utility contains the following embedded controller program. The version of embedded controller program can be viewed by running ThinkPad Configuration from your operating system and selecting the System Information button or by invoking the BIOS Setup Utility.
  1. Make sure there is no diskette in the diskette drive, then turn off the system.
  2. Turn on the system.
  3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button message is displayed at the lower left of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  4. Check Embedded Controller Version and BIOS Version. The embedded controller version is displayed on the first screen of the BIOS Setup Utility.
  5. Turn off the system.
