This System Program Service Utility updates the BIOS (system program) and the Embedded Controller(EC) program stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.
This release supports the following systems: - ThinkPad X60, X60s
The following operating systems are supported: - Microsoft Windows 7 32-bit - Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit (*1) - Microsoft Windows Vista 32-bit - Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit (*1) - Microsoft Windows XP (Home Edition and Professional) - Microsoft Windows 2000
Note: *1: Windows Vista and 7 64-bit support Intel Core 2 Duo mobile processors only. *2: If your RecordNow! CD writing program does not have a "Burn Image" entry, please upgrade RecordNow!
This section provides instructions using the RecordNow! program to make a bootable CD. Please refer to your other product manuals when using other CD writing programs.
Make sure you have a ThinkPad with a CD-RW, CD-RW/DVD combo or DVD multidrive installed. Prepare a blank CD-R or CD-RW disc.
Start Windows Vista, XP, 2000 and logon with administrative privileges.
Download the ISO file.
For Windows Vista, click Start, then click Start Search.
For Windows XP, 2000, click Start, then click Run...
Specify the path where you downloaded the file, then click OK. RecordNow! or the default recording software will open.
Example: C:\temp\7bujxxuc.iso
Follow the instructions on the screen.
Prepare the boot device
The resulting CD-R or CD-RW disc includes an operating system and is bootable on the supported ThinkPad models.
Note: The System Program Service Utility bootable CD supports only the ThinkPad Ultrabay Optical Disc Drive in the ThinkPad Ultrabay. (Not in the Docking Station Ultrabay)
Please confirm that an Optical Disc Drive is in the boot device list of your BIOS setup.
Turn on the ThinkPad.
While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key.
Select Startup, then select Boot(*).
Under "Boot Priority Order," set ATAPI CD0 to the top of the list, "1."
Press F10 to save the new setup.
Turn off or restart the system.
*Note: Please write down the current boot priority order for restoration later if you need to modify your boot list.
Update the BIOS
Notes:
Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment.
You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS.
If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
Print these instructions or display on another computer.
Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
Make sure you have a ThinkPad with an optical drive in the ThinkPad X6 UltraBase attached.
Insert the BIOS Update CD into the drive and turn on the computer.
Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information.
Press the Esc key to return to the menu.
Select Update system program and follow the instructions on the screen.
After the information panel appears, remove the BIOS Update CD in the drive then press the Enter key to restart the system.
Attention:
Do not turn off or suspend the system until the update has been completed. If you turn off or suspend the system while the update is still in progress, the system board may have to be replaced.
Initializing the BIOS
BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS settings:
Turn off the computer.
Turn on the system.
While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If you have set a supervisor password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you enter the password.
Press the F9 key to load default configuration.
Select Yes.
Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit.
Select Yes.
Restart the computer.
Notes:
After initialization you may need to re-apply some settings that you had changed previously.
After the initialization has been completed, the system restarts automatically.
BIOS information
Each version of the System Program Service Utility contains the following system program (BIOS) and the Embedded Controller program. The BIOS Version and the date can be viewed by running ThinkPad Configuration from your operating system and selecting the System Information button or by invoking the BIOS Setup Utility.
Turn on the system.
While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If you have set a supervisor password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you enter the password.
Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version.
CE800-D07FF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*1)
DC000-DFFFF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*2)
E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS
Notes:
(*1) This area becomes free by disabling the Internal Network Option ROM option under Config and Network in BIOS Setup Utility. This choice will disable PXE and WOL features.
(*2) This area becomes free by disabling the USB BIOS Support option under Config and USB in the BIOS Setup Utility. This choice does not affect using USB devices in Windows operating systems.

The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386.

Note: Certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems. The addresses vary and depend on the design of each Operating System.
