Video driver (ATI FireGL) for Linux - SLED 10 - ThinkPad T60p

Installation instructions
Install
Note:
  • You need to install Kernel development (Kernel Source code) and C/C++ Compiler before installing the Video driver.
  1. Start SUSE Linux.
  2. In a terminal window, use the su (switch user) command to obtain root privileges.
  3. Copy the RPM file to the hard drive, for example, /home/drivers directory.
  4. Change directory to the location where you saved the file.
  5. Type rpm -ihv [Package name] to install the video driver.
    Example: rpm -ihv l79v16us.rpm
  6. Type aticonfig --initial
  7. Go to K Menu, Logout, and select Restart Computer.

Uninstall
  1. Start SUSE Linux.
  2. In a terminal window, use the su (switch user) command to obtain root privileges.
  3. Type rpm -qa fglrx* to display the current version of fglrx installed in the system.
  4. Type rpm -e [version of fglrx installed]
    Example: rpm -e fglrx_6_9_0_SUSE101-8.26.1-1
  5. Type sax2 -r.
  6. Go to K Menu, Logout, and select Restart Computer.

Determining which version is installed
IIn a terminal window, type rpm -qa fglrx* to display the current version of fglrx installed in the system.

Determining if 3D is enabled
In a terminal window, type fglrxinfo and confirm OpenGL vendor string indicates ATI Technologies Inc.

Example:
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: FireGL X3-256 Pentium 4 (SSE2) (FireGL) (GNU_ICD)
OpenGL version string: 2.0.5642 (8.22.1)

Failure example:
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa GLX indirect

In the case of failure, confirm Kernel Source code and C/C++ Compiler are installed and reinstall the Video driver.

Determining 2D Driver is loaded
In a terminal window, type cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep Chipset | grep found and confirm the Marketing Name of the asic used and in brackets the internal family name and chip ID.

Example:
(--) Chipset MOBILITY FireGL V5200 (M56 71C4) found

In the case of failure, confirm Kernel Source code and C/C++ Compiler are installed and reinstall the Video driver.

Determining if Kernel Module is loaded
In a terminal window, type lsmod | grep fglrx and confirm that the kernel module compiled and loaded successfully.

Example:
fglrx 391116 8

In the case of failure, confirm Kernel Source code and C/C++ Compiler are installed and reinstall the Video driver.
