BIOS Update (Bootable CD) - ThinkPad R61 14.1 inch widescreen with IEEE 1394, ThinkPad T61, T61p

This BIOS Update Utility updates the BIOS (system program including the Embedded Controller (EC) program) stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.

The following operating systems are supported:
- Microsoft Windows 7 32-bit
- Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit
- Microsoft Windows Vista 32-bit
- Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit
- Microsoft Windows XP (Home Edition and Professional)
- Microsoft Windows 2000

To determine if this BIOS applies to your ThinkPad R61 or R61i system you may use either of the following methods:

  • Pressing F1 at startup:
    • Press F1 during startup. The initial BIOS screen will display the BIOS version. If the BIOS version begins with 7L this BIOS is supported on this system. If the BIOS version begins with 7K the BIOS is supported on the R61 without IEEE 1394.
  • Using the ThinkPad Configuration Utility:
    1. Click Start.
    2. Select All Programs, select ThinkVantage, then click ThinkPad Configuration.
    3. In the upper left corner, click System Information.
    4. If the BIOS version begins with 7L this BIOS is supported on this system. If the BIOS version begins with 7K, click here to downloaded the supported BIOS.

  • (Fix) Fixed an issue where the external display might have blank screen after closing the lid "When I close the lid: Do nothing" was selected in Power Options on Windows Vista.
  • (Fix) Fixed an issue where the computer might not start when a new ThinkPad Hard Drive Bay Adapter was installed in the Docking Station.

Creating the BIOS update CD
  1. Make sure you have a ThinkPad system with a CD-RW, CD-RW/DVD combo, or DVD multidrive installed and a blank CD-R or CD-RW disc.
  2. Start Windows Vista, XP, 2000 and logon with administrative privileges.
  3. Download the ISO file.
  4. For Windows Vista, click Start, then click Start Search.
    For Windows XP, 2000, click Start, then click Run...
  5. Specify the path where you downloaded the file, then click OK. RecordNow! or the default recording software will open.
    Example: C:\temp\7lujxxuc.iso
  6. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Prepare the boot device
  1. Power off the computer.
  2. Power on the computer.
  3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  4. Choose Startup from the menu.
  5. Choose Boot from the menu. Note the current boot priority order for restoration later if you need to modify your boot list.
  6. In Boot Priority Order, make sure ATAPI CD0 (when using ThinkPad internal optical drives) is on top of ATA HDD0.
  7. Press the F3 key to exit, or press the F10 key to save the new setup and then select Yes.
  8. Restart the computer.

Note: Please write down the current boot priority order for restoration later if you need to modify your boot list.

Update the BIOS
Notes:
  • Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment.
  • You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS.
  • If your system is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the system and detach it before proceeding.
  1. Print these instructions or display on another system.
  2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the system.
  3. Make sure your ThinkPad computer has an optical drive installed.
  4. Insert the BIOS Update CD into the optical drive and turn on the computer.
  5. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information.
  6. Press the Esc key to return to the menu.
  7. Select Update system program and follow the instructions on the screen.
  8. After the information panel appears, remove the BIOS Update CD from the optical drive then press the Enter key to restart the computer.
Initializing the BIOS
  1. BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS settings:
  2. Turn off the system.
  3. Turn on the system.
  4. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key.
  5. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If you have set a supervisor password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you enter the password.
  6. Press the F9 key to load default configuration.
  7. Select Yes.
  8. Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit.
  9. Select Yes.
  10. Restart the computer.

Notes:

  • After initialization you may need to re-apply some settings that you had changed previously.
  • After the initialization has been completed, the system restarts automatically.

BIOS information
Each version of the System Program Service Utility contains the following system program (BIOS) and the Embedded Controller program. The BIOS Version and the Embedded Controller version number can be viewed by entering the BIOS Setup Utility.
  1. Turn off the system.
  2. Turn on the system.
  3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key.
  4. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If you have set a supervisor password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you enter the password.
  5. Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version.
  6. Turn off the system.

Reserved BIOS area
The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by the BIOS and others. (When Intel Turbo Memory is installed in your system, conventional memory addresses are reserved 12k bytes more.)

nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M models

  • C0000-CEFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS
  • CF000-D0FFF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*1)
  • E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS

nVIDIA Quadro FX 570M models

  • C0000-CF7FF : Reserved for Video BIOS
  • CF800-D17FF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*1)
  • E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator GM965 models

  • C0000-CFFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS

Note: (*1) This area becomes free by disabling the Internal Network Option ROM option under Config and Network in BIOS Setup Utility. This choice will disable PXE and WOL features.
