Applicable countries and regions
Symptom

This tip describes the procedure needed to switch between Discrete Graphics and Integrated Graphics on Switchable Graphics systems using Windows XP

Affected configurations

Any of the following Lenovo systems with Switchable Graphics running Microsoft Windows Vista maybe affected by this symptom:

  • ThinkPad R400 (Machine Type: 2782, 2783, 2784, 2786, 2787, 2788, 2789)
  • ThinkPad T400 (Machine Type: 2764, 2765, 2766, 2767, 2768, 2769, 2773)
  • ThinkPad T500 (Machine Type: 2055, 2056, 2081, 2082, 2083, 2087, 2088)
  • ThinkPad W500 (Machine Type: 4058, 4061, 4062, 4063, 4064, 4065)
Solution

Note:

  • Before you begin, a system reboot is required to switch the graphics between Energy Savings (integrated) and High Performance (discrete). Be sure to save your work.
  • The first time you switch, Windows will detect new hardware on your system. By default, your system should be in discrete graphics mode, so you should have the ATI driver already installed. When you switch to integrated graphics, you will need to install the Intel driver.

Before you start, you should download the Intel graphics driver to be prepared to install it after you switch.

Intel Graphics Driver
  1. Reboot the system.
  2. During the BIOS POST screen (ThinkPad logo), press F1 to enter the BIOS setup utility.
  3. Press enter on the Config menu.
  4. Press enter on the Display menu.
  5. Change OS Detection for Switchable Graphics to Disabled.
  6. Change Graphics Device to be Integrated Graphics or Discrete Graphics as desired.
    • Note: If this is the first boot with the Integrated Graphics setting, Windows XP will detect a new device. At this point you should cancel out of the New Hardware Found wizard, and run the setup program from the Intel graphics driver previously downloaded.
Additional Information
  • The ATI Catalyst Control Center utility Icon remains in the system notification area even when the system is in Integrated Graphics mode. However, it does not work properly. When the icon is clicked, the utility shows an error message. The Intel utility is not present in the system notification area when the system is in Discrete Graphics mode.
  • The system hardware design is such that when the system is in Integrated Graphics mode, only the VGA external display port is enabled. Neither DisplayPort nor DVI can be used.
  • If there is a supervisor password set for the system, and Lock BIOS Settings is enabled, the supervisor password must be provided when entering BIOS setup in order to change the Graphics Device setting.
