Windows 95/98 installation supplement files - ThinkPad 390, 172x

Applicable countries and regions
The ThinkPad listed below incorporates several new devices that were not available when Microsoft Windows 95/98 was announced. This package provides the supplement files to support new devices and fix some problems for Windows 95 users.

The following models are supported:
- ThinkPad 390
- ThinkPad i series 1720, i Series 1721

Note: Drivers in different languages may not have the same version number (check the following file descriptions). The English version will work in all countries. If the version for your language is not the same as the English version, you may want to download the English version instead.

Refer to How to install the fix provided by Version 1.5 to existing Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2) and OEM Service Release 2.1 (OSR2.1) in the Installation Guide section to fix the problem.

Installation Guide
NOTES:
- To determine if you have to update the supplement files or not, please refer to the Summary of Changes section.
- If you use the Product Recovery CD-ROM shipped with your ThinkPad to restore the Windows 95/98 preload environment, you don't need this package. This package is required when you install Windows 95/98 without the Product Recovery CD-ROM. However, you may need this package to solve the problem, fixed in the version 1.5 package.


For Windows 98 users
How to install Windows 98 (Ver. 4.10.1998)

  1. Rename C:\windows\system\iosubsys\CDVSD.VXD to CDVSD.VXDOLD
  2. Copy updated files from Windows 95/98 supplement file package to the hard disk drive.
    1. Insert the Windows 95/98 supplement file diskette into the floppy disk drive.
    2. At a MS-DOS prompt, type COPY A:\DVD\CDVSD.VXD C:\windows\system\iosubsys and press Enter.
  3. Restart the system.

For Windows 95 users
NOTES:
The following versions of Windows 95 are available for your computer:

  • Retail Release Version (OSR0)- Service Pack Version 1 (OSR1)
  • OEM Service Release Version 2 without USB Supplement (OSR2)
  • OEM Service Release Version 2 with USB Supplement (OSR2.1)
  • OEM Service Release Version 2.5 (OSR2.5)

The OSR0 is an off-the-shelf version of Windows 95 and is available at any retail store.
The OSR1 can be downloaded from the Microsoft Internet home page http://www.microsoft.com .
The OSR2.x is available only as preloaded versions.

YOUR VERSION OF WINDOWS 95:
You can check which version of Windows 95 you are using by clicking on Start and moving the cursor to Settings and Control Panel, and then double-clicking on System. You can check the version in this window. Read the numbers under System.

- 4.00.950 means that it is Windows 95 OSR0.
- 4.00.950a means that it is Windows 95 OSR1.
- 4.00.950B means that it is Windows 95 OSR2 or OSR2.1.
- 4.00.950C means that it is Windows 95 OSR2.5.


How to install the fix provided by Version 1.5 to existing Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2) and OEM Service Release 2.1 (OSR2.1)

(Fix) With IBM 10/100 EtherJet CardBus Adapter, the performance of network data transfer is very slow in 10M bps mode.

  1. Rename C:\windows\system\CBSS.VXD to CBSSD.VXDOLD
  2. Copy updated file from Windows 95/98 supplement file package to the temporary directory.
    1. Insert the Windows 95/98 supplement file diskette into the floppy drive.
    2. At a MS-DOS prompt, type COPY A:\PCMCIA\CBSS.VXD C:\windows\system and press Enter and type COPY A:\PCMCIA\CBSS.VXD C:\windows\options\cabs and press Enter.
      (If the c:\windows\options\cabs directory does not exist, your system may not have the Windows 95/98 preload environment. If so, you can skip this step.)
  3. Restart the system.
  4. Confirm the version of CBSS.VXD is 4.00.1117 in the device manager.
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click the System icon and click the Device Manager tab.
    3. Click PCMCIA Socket.
    4. Click Texas Instruments PCI-125x CardBus Controller. Where, 125x can be 1250, 1251, 1251B or the likes of a serial. You may find two or four instances of the same object. Focus on any one of them.
    5. Click Properties.
    6. Click the Driver tab, then the Driver File Details button.
    7. Highlight the C:\Windows\system\CBSS.VXD line and check the version at the File version field. Make sure the version is 4.00.1117.

How to install Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2) and OEM Service Release 2.1 (OSR2.1)

  1. Copy all the cabinet files and installation programs to your hard disk drive.
    1. Make a temporary directory (for instance, C:\WIN95) and make sure enough hard disk drive space is available to store the cabinet files and installation programs (the required free space vary depending on the language of Windows 95).
    2. Copy all the cabinet (.CAB) files and installation programs from \WIN95 directory of Windows 95 CD. At a MS-DOS prompt, type COPY src_cd:\WIN95\*.* tgt_drv:\tgt_dir and press Enter. Where, src_CD: is the drive letter of CD-ROM drive (e.g. C, D,..) and tgt_drv:\tgt_dir: is the drive letter and temporary directory made in 1-1 (e.g. C:\WIN95).
  2. Copy updated files from Windows 95/98 supplement file package to the temporary directory.
    1. Insert the Windows 95/98 supplement file diskette into the floppy disk drive.
    2. Type COPY A:\SYSTEM\*.* tgt_drv:\tgt_dir and press Enter.
    3. Type COPY A:\PCMCIA\*.* tgt_drv:\tgt_dir and press Enter.
    4. Type COPY A:\USB\*.* tgt_drv:\tgt_dir and press Enter. Where, tgt_drv:\tgt_dir: is the drive letter and temporary directory made in 1-1 (e.g. C:\WIN95).
  3. Start installation from the temporary directory.
    1. Run SETUP.EXE in the temporary directory.
    2. Refer to the Windows 95 documentation and instructions on the screen to complete the installation.

NOTE: The Next step is to install some fix modules on Windows 95 OSR2.

  1. Install PC Card driver fix.
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click the System icon and click the Device Manager tab.
    3. Double-click Other Devices.
    4. Double-click PCI CardBus Bridge.
    5. Click the Driver tab.
    6. Click the Update Driver button.
    7. Select Yes (Recommended) and click Next.
    8. Click the Other Locations button.
    9. Type tgt_drv:\tgt_dir in the Location and click OK. Where, tgt_drv:\tgt_dir: is the drive letter and temporary directory made in 1-1 (e.g. C:\WIN95).
    10. Click Finish.
    11. If carddrv.exe is not found, type C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM in the Copy file from: field and click OK.
    12. If cbss.vxd is not found, type tgt_drv:\tgt_dir in the Copy file from: field and click OK.
    13. If csmapper.sys is not found, type C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM in the Copy file from: field and click OK.
    14. Click Close in the Texas Instruments PCI-1250 CardBus Controller Properties dialog box.
    15. Double-click the other PCI CardBus Bridge.
    16. Repeat steps 4-5 to 4-14.
  2. Install system driver fix.
    1. Click Start, point to Settings and click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click the System icon and click the Device Manager tab.
    3. Double-click Other Devices.
    4. Double-click PCI Bridge.
    5. Click the Driver tab.
    6. Click the Update Driver button.
    7. Select Yes (Recommended) and click Next.
    8. Click the Other Locations button.
    9. Type tgt_drv:\tgt_dir in the Location field and click OK. Where, tgt_drv:\tgt_dir: is the drive letter and temporary directory made in 1-1 (e.g. C:\WIN95).
    10. Click Finish.
    11. Click Close in the Properties dialog box.
    12. Double-click the other PCI Bridge.
    13. Repeat the step 5-5 to 5-11.
  3. Install USB driver fix.
    1. Insert Windows 95 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
    2. Refer to the Windows 95 instructions to complete USB supplement modules.
    3. Shutdown and restart the computer.
    4. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
    5. Double-click the System icon and click the Device Manager tab.
    6. Double-click Other Devices.
    7. Double-click PCI Universal Serial Bus.
    8. Click the Driver tab.
    9. Click the Update Driver button.
    10. Select Yes (Recommended) and click Next.
    11. Type tgt_drv:\tgt_dir in the Location field and click OK. Where, tgt_drv:\tgt_dir: is the drive letter and temporary directory made in 1-1 (e.g. C:\WIN95).
    12. Click Finish.
    13. If uhcd.sys is not found, type C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM in the Copy file from: field and click OK.
    14. Click Close in the Properties dialog box.
    15. Shutdown and restart the computer.

How to install Windows 95 OEM Service Release 0/ OEM Service Release 1

  1. Copy all the cabinet files and installation programs to your hard disk drive.
    1. Make a temporary directory (for instance, C:\WIN95) and make sure enough hard disk drive space is available to store the cabinet files and installation programs (the required free space vary depending on the language of Windows 95).
    2. Copy all the cabinet (.CAB) files and installation programs from \WIN95 directory of Windows 95 retail CD. At a MS-DOS prompt,
      Type COPY src_CD:\WIN95\*.* tgt_drv:\tgt_dir and press Enter. Where, src_CD: is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive (e.g. C, D,..) and tgt_drv:\tgt_dir: is the drive letter and temporary directory made in 1-1 (e.g. C:\WIN95).
  2. Copy updated files from Windows 95/98 supplement file package to the temporary directory.
    1. Insert the Windows 95/98 supplement file diskette into the floppy drive.
    2. Type COPY A:\SYSTEM\*.* tgt_drv:\tgt_dir and press Enter. Where, tgt_drv:\tgt_dir: is the drive letter and temporary directory made in 1.1 (e.g. C:\WIN95).
  3. Start installation from the temporary directory.
    1. Run SETUP.EXE in the temporary directory.
    2. Refer to the Windows 95 documentation and instructions on the screen to complete the installation.
  4. If needed, apply Windows 95 Service Pack 1 available from Microsoft Internet home page.
  5. Install system driver fix.
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click the System icon and click the Device Manager tab.
    3. Double-click Other Devices.
    4. Double-click PCI Bridge.
    5. Click the Driver tab.
    6. Click the Change Driver button.
    7. Select Other devices and click the OK button.
    8. Click the Have Disk button.
    9. Type tgt_drv:\tgt_dir in the Copy manufacturer's files from: field and click OK. Where, tgt_drv:\tgt_dir: is the drive letter and temporary directory made in 1.1 (e.g. C:\WIN95).
    10. Click OK.
    11. Click OK in the Properties dialog box.
    12. Double-click the other PCI Bridge.
    13. Repeat the step 5-5 to 5-11.
  6. If needed, remove all the files in the temporary directory and the directory itself after installation is completed to save the hard disk drive free space.
