Clean installation
- Start Windows 2000/XP and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator.
- Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start, then click Run.
- Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click the OK button.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
- Click Finish and reboot the system when prompt in order to complete the installation.
Upgrading or reinstall
NOTE: Remove any previously installed driver using the uninstall step in the next section.
- Start Windows 2000/XP and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator.
- Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start, then click Run.
- Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click the OK button.
- If the dialog box appears, select Reinstall or Update and then press Next.
- Click Finish to reboot the system and complete the installation.
How to uninstall the driver
- Start Windows 2000/XP and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator.
- Depending on the operating system choose one of the following paths:

- If Windows 2000, click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
- If Windows XP, click Start, then click Control Panel.
- Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
- Click SoundMAX and then click Change/Remove. (A dialog box appears.)
- Select Remove and then press the Next button.
- Click Finish to reboot the system to fully uninstall the drivers.
III. Determining which version is installed
Windows 2000
- Start Windows 2000.
- Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
- Double-click the System icon.
- Click the Hardware tab at the top of the System Properties window.
- Click the Device Manager button.
- Expand the Sound, video and game controllers section.
- Select SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio.
- Right-click SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio, and select Properties.
- Click the Driver tab.
- Click Driver Details...
- Select C:\winnt\system32\drivers\smwdm.sys to display the version number.
Windows XP
- Start Windows XP.
- Click Start, then click Control Panel.
- Click Performance and Maintenance.
- Double-click the System icon.
- Click the Hardware tab.
- Click the Device Manager button.
- Expand the Sound, video and game controllers section.
- Select SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio.
- Right-click SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio, and select Properties.
- Click the Driver tab.
- Click Driver Details...
- Select C:\winnt\system32\drivers\smwdm.sys, to display the version number.
