This package provides the audio driver for Microsoft Windows 2000/XP.

This package enables or updates the audio function of the following IBM ThinkPad computers:
- ThinkPad R31

I. Summary of changes
Version 5.12.01.3035

  • (New) Support for ThinkPad R31.
  • (Fix) The installed sound driver is not displayed in bold face in the package selection window, when it is displayed by choosing Install or upgrade drivers or Thinkpad software in Thinkpad Software Installer

    NOTE: In this release only the installer was changed but the functionality of this driver is same as previous release so there is no change for the version.

II. Installation instructions

Clean installation

  1. Start Windows 2000/XP and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click the OK button.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  6. Click Finish and reboot the system when prompt in order to complete the installation.

Upgrading or reinstall
NOTE: Remove any previously installed driver using the uninstall step in the next section.

  1. Start Windows 2000/XP and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click the OK button.
  5. If the dialog box appears, select Reinstall or Update and then press Next.
  6. Click Finish to reboot the system and complete the installation.

How to uninstall the driver

  1. Start Windows 2000/XP and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator.
  2. Depending on the operating system choose one of the following paths:
    • If Windows 2000, click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
    • If Windows XP, click Start, then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  4. Click SoundMAX and then click Change/Remove. (A dialog box appears.)
  5. Select Remove and then press the Next button.
  6. Click Finish to reboot the system to fully uninstall the drivers.

III. Determining which version is installed

Windows 2000

  1. Start Windows 2000.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click the System icon.
  4. Click the Hardware tab at the top of the System Properties window.
  5. Click the Device Manager button.
  6. Expand the Sound, video and game controllers section.
  7. Select SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio.
  8. Right-click SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio, and select Properties.
  9. Click the Driver tab.
  10. Click Driver Details...
  11. Select C:\winnt\system32\drivers\smwdm.sys to display the version number.

Windows XP

  1. Start Windows XP.
  2. Click Start, then click Control Panel.
  3. Click Performance and Maintenance.
  4. Double-click the System icon.
  5. Click the Hardware tab.
  6. Click the Device Manager button.
  7. Expand the Sound, video and game controllers section.
  8. Select SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio.
  9. Right-click SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio, and select Properties.
  10. Click the Driver tab.
  11. Click Driver Details...
  12. Select C:\winnt\system32\drivers\smwdm.sys, to display the version number.
