This package provides the audio driver for Microsoft Windows 98.

This package enables or updates the audio function of the following ThinkPad computers:

- ThinkPad A31, A31p
- ThinkPad R40
- ThinkPad T30, T40, T41, T42
- ThinkPad X30, X31

NOTE: This program is language independent and can be used with anylanguage system.

II. Installation instructions

Clean install

  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start and then click Run.
  4. Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click OK.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  6. Click Finish and reboot the system when prompt in order to complete the installation.

Update install
NOTE: Remove any previously installed driver using the uninstall step in the next section.

  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start and then click Run.
  4. Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click OK.
  5. If the dialog box appears, select Reinstall or Update and then click Next.
  6. Click Finish to reboot the system and complete the installation.

Uninstall

  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Click Start, select Settings, then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. Click SoundMax x86 VM General MIDI Server and then click Add/Remove. A dialog box will appear.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click OK and reboot the system to fully uninstall the drivers.

III. Determining which version is installed

  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Click Start, select Settings, then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click System.
  4. Click the Device Manager tab.
  5. Expand the Sound, video and game controllers section.
  6. Select SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio.
  7. Right click SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio, and select Properties.
  8. Click the Driver tab.
  9. Click Driver Details.
  10. Select C:\windows\system\smw95.vxd, to display the version number. Confirm the last 4 digits are 0627, same as last version.
