The following information steps through the IBM Product Recovery Program for a Disk-to-Disk recovery of the preloaded operating system/software that came on the ThinkPad system from the factory.
NOTE: The recovery process may take up to 2 hours.
NOTE: All files on the C: drive will be lost in the recovery process. Be sure to back up copies of the files you have saved on your C: drive before you begin.
- Power on the computer.
- When the text, To Start the IBM Product Recovery Program, appears press the F11 key. After a brief introduction screen, the Main Menu should appear. If you are unable to access the IBM Product Recovery Program after pressing F11, Click here to see information on restoring the boot manager F11 option for Disk to Disk recovery.
- Two options appear:
- Full Recovery: Reformat your hard disk and restore all files.
- System utilities: View the system utilities menu.

- This selection displays a Terms and conditions screen, with a question, Do you accept these conditions? Y/N.
- If after reading the license agreement you agree to the terms and conditions, select Y. Another screen will appear, Attention - READ THIS BEFORE YOU CONTINUE with a question, Do you want to continue? Y/N will appear.
- Read the information carefully and if you agree, select Y, your hard disk will be formatted, and all files will be deleted, prompting with the question, Do you want to continue? Y/N will appear.
- Select Y and the recovery process will initiate, with several screens appearing for identification, ending with an IBM Product Recovery screen. Progress indicators for Entire Progress and a second indicator what will change each process, as well as Time Elapsed: 00:00:00 indicator at the bottom will appear.
Once the indicators complete at 100%, the machine will automatically restart.
NOTE: If you are recovering a Microsoft Windows 98 SE preload, you will need to press the F11 key during this restart, to initiate the final creation of directories and files. If F11 is bypassed, Microsoft Windows 98 SE will load to the Desktop, and the process of recovery will need to be restarted from the beginning.
- Several more processes, such as the creation of the hibernation area, will follow, completing with another restart.
- The final start of the system will display, hardware detection occurring.
System utilities

- Run Diagnostics: Run diagnostics on your computer hardware.
This selection executes PC Doctor, where you may test various components of the computer.
- Create a Recovery Repair diskette: Create a bootable diskette to restore access to the IBM Product Recovery program on the hard disk.
This selection requires an optional 3.5 floppy diskette drive attached to the ThinkPad system or other docking option.
