System Migration Assistant Readme (15KB)

The ThinkVantage System Migration Assistant (SMA) application is a system manageability tool that runs on ThinkPad and ThinkCentre computers. System Migration Assistant reduces the time and effort that is needed to migrate end users to a new system by capturing settings and data files from the source computer so that they can be applied to the target computer. As part of the ThinkVantage Technology family of solutions, SMA helps provide a cost-effective migration process when users are moving to a new Microsoft Windows operating system, including Microsoft Windows Vista™.

System Migration Assistant quickly and accurately migrates user, system, and network settings, e-mail and data from one computer to another. It has an easy-to-use graphical user interface for end-user migrations and a silent mode that enables IT personnel to automate the migration process to a large number of systems. Additional features enable you to customize the migration process.

Supported systems
  • All ThinkPad Systems
  • All ThinkCentre Systems
  • All Value Line desktop and notebook systems
System requirements

Source and target computers must meet the following conditions:

  • A Microsoft Windows® operating system supported by SMA must be installed.
  • The hard drive must have 50MB of space free for the SMA installation files.
  • The hard drive on the source computer must have enough free space the temporary files that are created during the capture phase. The disk space required depends on the size of the SMA migration file created.
  • The target computer must be able to access the SMA migration file. You can use a local area network (LAN), a removable medium (such as a USB hard drive), or an Ethernet crossover cable.
  • For a PC to PC migration, the target computer must have free space on the disk amounting to twice the size of the temporary files.
  • For a file transfer migration with default settings, the migration file destination must have free space on the disk equal to the total size of the migration files.
