BIOS Update Utility - ThinkPad R61 15.4 inch widescreen models, ThinkPad R61i 15.4 inch widescreen with IEEE 1394 models

Applicable countries and regions
This BIOS Update Utility updates the BIOS (system program including the Embedded Controller (EC) program) stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions.

This release supports the following systems: (*1)
- ThinkPad R61 (15.4 inch widescreen models)
- ThinkPad R61i (15.4 inch widescreen model with IEEE 1394)

Note:
*1: Applicable for certain models only, please refer to the Supported system list in the readme file for more details.

The following operating systems are supported:
- Microsoft Windows 7 32-bit
- Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit (*1)(*2)
- Microsoft Windows Vista 32-bit
- Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit (*1)(*2)
- Microsoft Windows XP (Home Edition and Professional)

Notes:
(*1) Windows Vista and 7 64-bit support Intel Core 2 Duo mobile processors only.
(*2) If Windows Vista 64-bit is already installed on your system, then you must use the bootable CD ISO format of this BIOS update.

  • (New) Added the new BIOS Setup option to avoid system hang even if the AC adapter is removed from the ThinkPad Advanced Mini Dock while the computer is attached to it.
    • How to enable: Set the Legacy Devices on Mini-Dock option to 'Disabled' of Docking Station of Config in BIOS Setup menu.
    • Note: A serial and a parallel port on the Mini-Dock will be disabled with this setup.

Version 7OETA9WW (2.09)

  • (Fix) Looks like a system hang after continuous Fn-F7 hitting at BIOS Setup or DOS. EC could not handle large amount of interrupts.

Version 7OETA7WW (2.07)

  • (New) Added the new error code 1830 to indicate that a single DIMM is not installed in the memory slot 0. Solution for the error code: With a single DIMM, install the DIMM into the memory slot 0 (a slot different from having used it).
  • (Fix) Unexpected interrupts from the USB controller may occur.

  • (Fix) A Bluetooth LED is On on the computer without the Bluetooth card installed.
  • (Fix) The LCD brightness always becomes maximum level after Windows starts.

Notes
  • If you update to the BIOS version 2.07-1.08 or later, you are not able to get back to the older BIOS versions.
  • This package does not work on Windows Vista 64-bit systems. Use the BIOS Update CD for BIOS updates for Windows Vista 64-bit systems.
  • (Limitation) The secondary hard disk with hard disk password may not be detected when the following procedures are done on Windows Vista.
  1. Set the hard disk password in a secondary hard disk.
  2. Hot-attach the secondary hard disk to the computer.
  3. Go into standby mode and then resume normal operation to let Windows Vista recognize the hard disk.
  4. Input the hard disk password when a password prompt for the secondary hard disk appears.
  5. After the Windows desktop appears, double-click the Computer icon. But, the secondary hard disk may not be detected.
Installation instructions

Notes:

  • If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the BIOS. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Version Information section.
  • You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack.
  • If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
  • Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in the RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) or similar environment.

Attention:

  • Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU DO THAT WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.
Manual update
  1. Print these instructions or display on another computer.
  2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
  3. Start Windows 7 32-bit, Vista 32-bit, XP and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer.
  4. Double-click 7ouj15us.exe to extract it to your hard drive. The default location is C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7ouj15us.
  5. For Windows 7 and Vista, click Start, select All Programs, select Accessories, then click Run... For Windows XP, click Start, then click Run...
  6. Specify WINUPTP.EXE with the full path name where you saved the package, then click OK. Example: C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7ouj15us\WINUPTP.EXE
  7. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  8. Select Update ThinkPad BIOS and follow the instructions on the screen.
  9. After the update has been completed, the program shows a message Flash Update has been successfully completed.... Follow the instructions on the screen to restart the computer.
Unattended update

Note:
This procedure is intended only for system administrators. The BIOS is updated without any user interaction.

  • Refer to the Manual Update section, and download and extract the files.
  • At the command line, execute WINUPTP.EXE with the -S option.
    Example: C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7ouj15us\WINUPTP -s
  • To view the update result, refer to the WINUPTP.log file created at the same directory of the package.
Initializing the BIOS
BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS settings:
  1. Turn off the system.
  2. Turn on the system.
  3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key.
  4. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.

  9. Select Yes.

Note:

  • After initialization you may need to reapply some settings that you had changed previously.

BIOS information
Each version of the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility contains the following system program (BIOS) and the Embedded Controller program. The BIOS Version and the Embedded Controller version number can be viewed by entering the BIOS Setup Utility.
  1. Turn off the system.
  2. Turn on the system.
  3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key.
  4. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  5. Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version.

Memory Map information
Reserved Area

Reserved Area:
The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by the BIOS and others.

  • C0000-CFFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS
  • D0000-D1FFF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*a)
  • E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS

Notes:

*a: This area becomes free by disabling the Ethernet LAN Option ROM option under Config and Network in the BIOS Setup Utility. This choice will disable PXE and WOL features.

Usable Area
The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386.
  1. D2000-DFFFF

    Note: Certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems. The addresses vary and depend on the design of each Operating System.
