USB 2.0 devices not functioning properly after installing retail version of Microsoft Windows 2000 - NetVista / ThinkCentre

Symptom
After you perform an installation of retail Microsoft Windows 2000, no USB 2.0 drivers will not be loaded, which may cause USB performance issues. Your USB devices may not be detected until the system is rebooted with the device attached, then the USB 2.0 Root Hub and The Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller will install properly.

Affected configurations
Any of the following systems running Microsoft Windows 2000 retail version
  • ThinkCentre A30 (Type 2296, 8191, 8198, 8199, 8316, 8434)
  • ThinkCentre A50 (Type 8320)
  • ThinkCentre A50p (Type 8192, 8193, 8194, 8195, 8196, 8197)
  • ThinkCentre M50 (Type 8185, 8186, 8187, 8188, 8189, 8190)
  • ThinkCentre S50 (Type 8183, 8184, 8416, 8417, 8418)
Solution
To correct this issue, follow these instructions:
  1. Download and install Microsoft Service Pack 4.
  2. Follow the instructions provided by Microsoft to apply Service Pack 4.

After applying Service Pack 4, do the following,

  1. Click Start, click Shut Down. The Shut Down Windows appears.
  2. On the drop down menu, select Restart, then click OK in order to restart the system.
  3. Once the system reaches the desktop icons, click Start, select Setting, click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the System icon. The System window appears.
  5. Click the Hardware tab, then click the Device Manager button.
  6. Under the Other Devices category, right click Universal Serial Bus (USB) controller heading, then select Uninstall.
  7. Restart the system.
  8. When you log back on the system, Windows will automatically detect and install both the Standard Enhance PCI to USB Host controller and the USB 2.0 Root Hub.
