Unable to setup a Microdrive - ThinkPad A20, T20
Applicable countries and regions

Symptom
When a ThinkPad A20/T20 computer starts without CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive in the Ultrabay2000, the Microdrive in the PCCard slot is not configured under Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98.

Affected configurations
All ThinkPad A20, T20 systems

Cause
Windows 95/98 tries to configure the hardware resource for Microdrive and assigns IRQ15 and I/O 170-177, but those hardware resources are reserved for Ultrabay2000 IDE/ATAPI devices (CD-ROM or DVD-ROM). This results in a resource conflict and the Microdrive does not work.

Solution
Update the Ultrabay/Swap driver to the lastest version. Click here to download the new ultrabay/swap driver.

Workaround
If you are not able to download the driver at this time, you can resolve this problem by assigning resources other than IRQ15, I/O 170-177, so that the Microdrive and Ultrabay2000 devices do not conflict each other. The following step shows how to set it up.

  1. Make sure Ultrabay2000 IDE device (CD-ROM or DVD-ROM) is inserted, then turn on the system to start Windows 95/98.
  2. Insert the Microdrive in a PCCard Slot.
  3. Open the Device Manager, click View devices by connection radio button. Then double-click to expand Plug and Play BIOS, PCI Bus, and Texas Instruments PCI-1450 CardBus Controller. Then select Standard IDE/ESDI Hard Disk Controller.
    view devices by connection listing
  4. Click the Properties button, and then click the Resources tab.
    resources listing
  5. Unselect Use automatic settings, then select Basic configuration 005, which has the same resource settings. In this example, Basic configuration 004 and Basic configuration 005 use the same resource, Interrupt Request is 10, Input/Output range is 1050-105F.

  6. Click OK to save the setting. Click Yes on the confirmation window.
    forced configuration dialog
  7. Setup is completed. The new Basic configuration 008 is made.
    new resources listing
  8. Now the Microdrive is configured/recognized with or without Ultrabay2000 devices.
