Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver for Windows 7 (64-bit), Vista (64-bit) and XP - ThinkPad

This package installs the Storage driver to enable the following SATA Storage Controller:
- Intel® 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller
- Intel® 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller
- Intel® ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller
- Intel® ICH8M-E/ICH9M-E/M SATA RAID Controller

The following operating systems are supported:
- Windows 7 64-bit (*1)
- Windows Vista 64-bit
- Windows XP Professional x64 Edition (*2)

Important notes
ThinkPad R400, R500, T400, T500, W500 users:
  • A Blue Screen error will come up on the Windows preload when these models boot with Compatible mode instead of AHCI that is modified from the BIOS Setup/ Config/Serial SATA menu.
  • This is caused by an absence of a compatible driver on the Windows preload.
  • Stay AHCI mode when you boot Windows preload.


Installation instructions

Note: If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the software. To determine if you should update the software, refer to the Version Information section.

Manual Install

This section assumes to use Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.

[Downloading file]

  1. Click once on the underlined file name. Once this is done, some pop-up windows will appear.
  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  3. In the window to choose Run or Save, click the Save button.
  4. Choose the folder you would like to download the file to and click the Save button. A different window will appear and the download will begin and complete. Once the download has completed, there may or may not be a message stating that the download completed successfully.

[Extracting file]

  1. Make sure to be logged on with administrative privileges.
  2. Locate the folder where the file was downloaded.
  3. Locate the file that was downloaded and double-click it.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  5. In the Select Destination Location window, click Next. If you would like to select a different folder, click Browse.
  6. In the Ready to Install window, click Install. All the necessary files will be extracted to the folder selected in Extracting File Step 5.
  7. Uncheck the checkbox next to Install ..... now, and then click Finish to complete extraction.

Delete the file saved in Downloading File Step 4.

[Installing files]

  1. Click Start.
  2. [Windows 7/Vista] Right-click Computer, and then click Properties. At the left pane, click Device Manager.
  3. [Windows XP] Right-click My Computer, click Properties, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
  4. Double-click the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers or Storage controllers category.
  5. Double-click either of the following devices.
    • Intel(R) ICH8M SATA AHCI Controller
    • Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller
    • Intel(R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller
    • Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller
    • Intel(R) ICH8M-E/ICH9M-E/M SATA RAID Controller
    • Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller
    • RAID Controller.
  6. Click the Driver tab, then click Update Driver Software...
  7. Click Browse my computer for driver software.
  8. Click Browse..., then point to driver location specified in Extracting File Step 5.
  9. Make sure the checkbox next to Include subfolders is checked and click Next.
  10. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete installation and restart the computer.

Determining which version is installed
To check the version of the device driver that is installed on your system, follow these instructions:
  1. Right-click the My Computer(XP) or Computer(Vista/7) and click Properties.
  2. Click Device Manager.
  3. Click the + sign in front of the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers or Storage controllers category.
  4. Double-click either of the following devices:
    • Intel® 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller
    • Intel® 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller
    • Intel® ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller
    • Intel® ICH8M-E/ICH9M-E/M SATA RAID Controller.
  5. Click the Driver tab, the driver version is displayed.
